By "meeting people where they are,"this role would be a connection point between community members and the City. How does this recommendation promote racial equity and anti-racism in the community? This role would help ensure that communities of color are afforded equity,justice,transparency and accountability. I think that is something all of us at the City have to do. I recognize the passion behind this proposal and I don't disagree with anything that's been said about the objectives. I'm not afraid of change, I'm not afraid of the unknown, I think absolutely we need to get there. But, I think one person with the expectation they will change the entire City culture, I fear that's symbolic and takes away from the harder work that everybody at the City has to do. Valerie Sasaki— I just want to respond to City Attorney Rihala's point because I think this is one of those situations where the pace of progress moves forward and what we're talking about here is an incremental step forward.And I think voting against this creates a world where we've allowed the perfect to be the enemy of the good. And for that reason I am voting in favor of this recommendation. Creation of a Professional Standards Sergeant(PSS) in the Tigard Police Department. 2. Request funding of the PSS position through City General Fund dollars in Fiscal Year 2021-2022. How does this recommendation promote racial equity and anti-racism in the community? With the addition of this position focused on professional standards,the Tigard Police Department can increase the level of transparency, promote racial equity, and show greater accountability to the community.
