Hello,
The City of Tigard's post office is a substation of the Portland post office. The City Council has over the years made
attempts to have the City of Tigard's post office's status changed, because it seems appropriate for a city of our size to
have its own post office to benefit our businesses and residents. In fact in 2002, it was a City Council goal:
GOAL S: GROWTH MANAGEMENT
A. Continue to evaluate the results of the Bull Mountain study and discuss the findings with the residents.
Cooperatively develop a course of action.
B. Monitor the progress of the Durham Quarry development, receiving regular council updates.
C. Consider ways to support the provision of affbrdable housing.
D. Activejsupport implementation of the Wlashington Square Regional Center Plan.
E. Evaluate the need and feasibility of having the Tigard Post Ofce Branch become the Tigard Post Office.
In January 2003, the status report on fulfilling the 2002 City Council goals had this statement regarding this goal:
An effort was made to evaluate the opportunity to create a Tigard post office;however, after
discussions with the post office and through input with our local congressman, it appears that no
opportunity exists to create a Tigard post office.
Post office zip codes do not correlate to city boundaries. For example, a good share of Tigard and I believe most of King
City and some of the unincorporated areas have a 97224 zip code. I've been on staff with the City of Tigard since 1986
and the council and residents have periodically tried to make their case that we would be better served if we had our
own post office. So far, we have had no luck as I believe the post office is reducing and consolidating its operations
wherever it can.
