PO - Citizen Correspondence + COT Replies re.Post Office January 25, 2011 Richard A. Bernhard 10155 SW Highland Drive Tigard, OR 97224-4666 Dear Mr. Bernhard, Thank you for your letter dated December 30, regarding the possibility of gaining a branch office of the U.S. Postal Service that is independent of the Portland branch. Based on almost ten years of communicating with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Congressman David Wu's office in Washington, DC, I've learned that Tigard is highly unlikely to get a postal branch separate from Portland. In 2002, the city received a letter from the US Postmaster responding to repeated requests for a Tigard Branch office. The letter stated that postal sorting equipment would continue to recognize both Tigard and Portland as valid city names associated with mail addressed to 97223, 97224 and 97281. We were assured that computers would recognize Tigard first, and then Portland as a valid city name, which is why your mail arrives either way. The last letter on this topic arrived from Congressman Wu. Pervasive and popular use of e-mail and electronic communication devices have caused significant decreases in revenue at the USPS, and in response they have virtually eliminated the installation of new, full-service post offices throughout the country. I do want to thank you for taking the time to write, and I am wholly in agreement with your statement 'We are all very lucky to have such agreat city..." Tigard is a wonderful city, made all the better by residents like you who take pride in the place we call home. Kind regards, Craig E. Dirksen, Mayor City of Tigard RICHARD A. Dirksen City of Tigard 13125 SW Hall Blvd. Tigard, OR 97233 - Dear Mayor Dirksen, I just finished reading the January 2011 Edition of Cityscape, and I sat back and mused at what a beautiful City Tigard is. We are all very lucky to have such a great City, and such responsible people like you running it. I love Tigard! However, whenever I get a letter, or any mailing, it is addressed to me at Portland, OR. Solicitations that include return address stickers always show that I live in Portland, OR. Whenever I give my address as Tigard, OR, it comes back as Portland, OR. I have even had calls from companies that I have ordered something from, and they say, "You gave your address as Tigard, OR, the data base says you live in Portland, OR; which is correct?" I know that I am probably not the first one to complain about this, but why can't our beautiful City of Tigard be recognized as Tigard, and not Portland? All of our surrounding neighbors, Tualatin, Lake Oswego, Sherwood, and Beaverton etc. are recognized as independent cities, why not Tigard? I know that you are as proud of Tigard as I am, and can correct this terrible blunder and have Tigard recognized. It's about time! Sincerely, Richard A. Dirksen MAY 2 2 1006 City of Tigard Administration 13125 SW Hall Blvd Portland, OR 97223 Re: Postal Designations for Tigard Dear Mayor Dirksen: Why do we need a"Tigard Post Office"? Why not simply change the computer to show 97223, 97224, & 97281 as Tigard only? Eliminate the Portland name from these three zip codes. What happens is this. UPS, FedEx, Catalog companies,Magazines etc. simply punch in the zip code and then the city designation comes up and that is what is printed on the label. I am very proud of our city and resent receiving mail and packages addressed to the city of Portland. Just yesterday, I was ordering some items from a catalog. The service clerk asked for my zip code and she promptly said: "Portland". I said: Hell Nod It is"Tigard" which I had to spell for her. So all we need is for the US Postal Service to issue a notice to all of these businesses, telling them that the zip codes 97223, 97224,& 97281 is changed from Portland to Tigard. Sincerely, Frank R. I want to let you know that we have been at work for 4 years with the United States Postal Service and Congressman David Wu in Washington,DC to get a post office for Tigard rather than being a branch of the Portland post office. We received a letter from the Postmaster stating that the postal sorting equipment recognizes both,Tigard and Portland as valid city delivery names., The Tigard delivery area is identified by Zip Codes of 97223, 97224 and 97281. The computers recognize Tigard fust and then Portland as the valid city name, which is why your mail can be delivered with either city name. In response to our request for a Tigard Post Office, Congressman Wu contacted the Postal Service and learned that they are `suffering from significant decreases in revenue and have virtually eliminated the installation of new full service post offices throughout the country. Perhaps if Congressman Wu and the Postmaster heard directly from Tigard citizens, we could make progress towards getting a Tigard post office. You can contact Congressman Wu at 1023 Longworth HOB,Washington,DC 20515. I-Es phone number is-(202) 225-0855. Dear Mayor Dirksen: According to the US Postal Service, the City of Tigard does not exist. Zip code 97223 is the City of Portland. Examples of this are enclosed for your edification. It is irritating to me that my City is not recognized by the postal service and yet, Beaverton is recognized. I would like to see the City put pressure on the USPS to change this oversight by them.
