Attention: Dustin Nichols -1Gl- David Gessert, P. E. ( P'RES:oq.ac5A1 I From: Fire Protection Engineer High-Piled Rack Storage of Combustible Materials Subject/Project: HobbyKing 14140 SE 72^d Ave, Suite 130 Tigard, OR 97223 Job No.: 2020-27 Total Pages: 4 Introduction HobbyKing is planning the installation of new pallet racks at their leased facility located at 14140 SE 72^d Avenue, Suite 130, Tigard, OR. This letter addresses the requirements of Oregon Structural Specialty Code 2019 Edition, Section 435 and Oregon Fire Code (OFC) 2019 Edition, Chapter 32 for the new pallet racks. Shelf storage is also addressed. Both pallet rack storage and shelf storage were found to be code compliant based on the description in this letter. HobbyKing is an online retailer providing Radio Control (RC) planes, drones, helicopters, cars, boats as well as batteries, chargers, radio equipment, robotics, servos, 3D printing, tools, bags, storage, and the like. This material is consistent with a Class IV Commodity or less of a fire hazard. Existing fire sprinkler protection for the HobbyKing's space is 0.495 gpm per square foot over a design area of 2,000 square feet as shown on the hydraulic data nameplate located at fire sprinkler riser. The fusing temperature is unknown of the fire sprinklers installed at the ceiling of HobbyKing's warehouse. The conservative approach is to assume the ceiling fire sprinklers have an ordinary-temperature rating. Ceiling height of the HobbyKing's space varied between 23.7 to 26.8 feet as measured with a laser distance meter. HobbyKing has investigated the storage planned for the SE 72nd Avenue warehouse. They have determined the maximum nonexpanded plastic weight per pallet is 5 Letter to Dustin Nichols May 12, 2020 Page 2 of 4 percent of the total pallet load weight. Additionally, HobbyKing has determined that the maximum expanded plastic volume is 10 percent of the total pallet volume. This material has a fire hazard classification of a Class IV Commodity. See OSSC (2019) Figure 435.3.8(1) and OFC (2019) Figure 3203.9(1). Based on the above information the open rack storage has a maximum code compliant storage height of 18. See National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13, 2016 Edition, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, Table 16.2.1.3.2 and Figure 16.2.13.2(d). For shelf storage the maximum code compliant storage height is 15 feet. See NFPA 13 (2016) Figures 14.2.4.1 and 14.2.4.3 and part 14.2.1(2). HobbyKing's planned maximum storage heights are 16 feet for the open rack storage area and 12 feet for the shelf storage area. OSSC (2019) Section 435 and OFC (2019) Chapter 32 Considerations Provisions of OSSC (2019) Section 435.2 and OFC (2019) Chapter 32 3201.3 are addressed as follows: 1. For the floor plan of HobbyKing's space showing locations and dimensions of high-piled storage see drawings prepared by Northwest Handling Systems. 2. Ceiling height in the HobbyKing's warehouse space varies between approximately 23.7 feet to 26.8 feet. Useable storage height varies between approximately 15 to 18 feet based on the how material is stored and limitations of the fire sprinkler system. 3. The number to tiers within each storage rack is four and is shown on the drawings for Northwest Handling Systems. 4. Clearance between the top of the rack storage and the fire sprinkler deflector varies between approximately 6.7 feet and 9.8 feet based on a maximum rack storage height of 16 feet. 5. Aisle width in the pallet rack area is greater than eight feet. See drawings for Northwest Handling Systems. 6. No solid-pile storage is planned for the HobbyKing's space that is above 12 feet in height. 7. Material stored in the new pallet racks in the HobbyKing's warehouse is consistent with a Commodity Class IV or less of a fire hazard. 8. No banded or encapsulated commodities are planned. 9. Since the high-piled storage area planned for HobbyKing is less than 12,000 square feet, building access is not required. See OSSC (2019) Table 435.5.1 and OFC (2019) Table 3206.2 Letter to Dustin Nichols May 12, 2020 Page 3 of 4 10. Based on information on the hydraulic data nameplate at the fire sprinkler riser for the existing warehouse fire sprinkler protection is designed to a minimum of is 0.495 gpm per square foot over a design area of 2,000 square feet. Fire detection is not required and none is it installed in the warehouse. See OSSC (2019) Table 435.5.1 and OFC (2019) Table 3206.2 11. The fire sprinkler riser for the building is installed on the west side of the building closest to SW 72nd Avenue. It accessed through that tenant's space. 12. Smoke removal (roof vents) and curtain boards are not required and they are not installed. See OSSC (2019) Table 435.5.1 and OFC (2019) Table 3206.2 13. Provision for longitudinal flue spaces has been provided in the pallet rack design. See the drawings prepared for Northwest Handling Systems. One of the following two flue space options are required for double row pallet racks: Option 1: Six-inch transverse flue space with no longitudinal flue space. Option 2: Three-inch transverse flue space and 6-inch longitudinal flue space. 14. No additional information has been requested by the jurisdiction regarding design features, commodities, storage arrangement, and fire protection features. Conclusion Both pallet rack storage and shelf storage were found to be Code compliant based on the description in this letter.
