i KALWALL GLAZING PANELS
Kalwall glazing panels are an ICBO listed glazing panel fabricated using
fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets on the top and bottom and an
aluminum grid core. The aluminum grid core is made up of"I" shaped
aluminum sections that run both longitudinally and transverse. The top and
bottom FRP sheets are glued to the aluminum grid core. This is shown on the
enclosed figure.
In the design of the Kalwall panels, the FRP sheets are considered as acting
composite with the aluminum grid core. Load deflection tests have been
conducted on typical Kalwall panels. The test procedure was to load the panels
in increments of 10 psf and measure the deflection. The deflection measured
was always less than the deflection that would be calculated using only the
aluminum grid core. This is verification that the FRP sheets are acting
composite with the aluminum grid core. From these load deflection tests, an
empirical El value was calculated for the Kalwall panels. This empirical El
value is used in the design of the Kalwall glazing panel system. When reference
is made to an empirical EI value in the calculations, it is this test value that is
being referenced. The empirical El value for Kalwall panels using a 6063-T6
aluminum grid core is 2.76 x 10 ksi per rib. For Kalwall glazing panels using
6005-T5 aluminum in the grid core, the empirical EI value is 3.0 x 103ksi per rib.
For Kalwall glazing panels using 6063-T6 aluminum in the grid core, the
calculated El per rib is 1.59 x 10'ksi. Therefore, the El adjustment factor would
be 2.76 divided by 1.59 = 1.74. The calculated section modulus for the panel is
multiplied by this 1.74 factor to determine the empirical section modulus. The
empirical section modulus is used in determining the momnt capacity of the
panel. Kalwall glazing panels made up of 6005-T5 aluminum grid core have a
calculated El per rib of 1.81 x l d ksi per rib. Therefore, the adjustment factor
for
theselazin panels g p s wo uld then be determined by multiplying g in the calculated
section modulus by 1.65.
The Code has no deflection criteria for glazing panels. It does not matter
. whether the glazing panels are made up of glass, plastic, or in this case, an FRP
sandwich panel. The deflection criteria developed over the years by Kalwall is
the span length divided by 46.
