Summary: The first committee meeting was held January 15, 1986. Subsequent
meetings were held January 22 and 30; February 5 and 19; March 6 and 20;
April 2, 16 and 30; May 7, 14 and 28.
Following lengthy discussions and much effort on the part of committee members in
contacting numerous business persons and citizens, a calendar of events was estab-
lished to commemorate Tigard's new Civic Center. (See attachments.)
On Saturday, May 17, 1986 at 1:00 PM Mayor John Cook announced the official dedi-
cation of the Tigard Civic Center. Curtis Tigard, descendant of the pioneer family
for whom Tigard is named, spoke about Tigard's beginnings and recounted interesting
events during the city's early years. Mayor Cook cut the ceremonial ribbon as bal-
loons were released into a blue, sunny sky. The Civic Center became a part of
Tigard's history.
As a footnote to this report, it should be recorded that the committee worked with
tremendous energy and enthusiasm. They gave much time outside of the scheduled
meetings in putting the various programs together.
It should be noted also that Russ Joki and Amy Powell, both from the Tigard School
District, were actively involved in much of the programming and supplied major
support for various activities.
Ken Schilling, local artist, created the celebratory painting showing a stylized
Civic Center backed by Mt. Hood. "Tigard - 25 Years and Building" (the official
dedication theme) was placed across the bottom of the work. This art work was
transferred to T-shirts which were sold to benefit the Tigard Arts and Gifts com-
mittee. (See treasurer's report attached.)
Tigard Flying Tigers, a local running group, started the week of dedication activities
with an 8K run and 3K fun run to benefit Tigard Loaves & Fishes on May 10. This was
an appropriate event for a growing city which has involved many of its citizens in
building a better place to live.
At the final meeting on May 28, the Committee asked Juanita Caday, treasurer, to close
the books as soon as feasible. It was decided by consensus that any profit from the
various fund-raising activities staged by the Dedication Committee would be trans-
ferred to the Tigard Arts and Gifts Committee (TAG) , that any late bills would be
forwarded to TAG and that the T-shirt inventory would be transferred to TAG.

The Committee asked Irene Ertell, secretary, to write a summary report with the
treasurer's report attached. It was also decided to attach memorabilia from the
various activities to the report which will be kept at the Library. In the event
that the City of Tigard decides to create a time capsule, the report and memora-
bilia will be offered for enclosure.
The City Council, at its June 9, 1986 meeting, awarded Keys to the City to persons
who had made contributions to the Civic Center Dedication acitivities.
Respectfully submitted,
