Dear Mark,
Per our conversation this morning a sketch and calculations are pr,,vided below
The volume of the room is approximately 119,000 cubic feet. Per UMC section 603(d)1,
for a building that is not tight construction, 1000 btuh of heat input per 50 cubic feet of
room volume is considered adequate room volume for room source combustion air. For
the case at hand: 119,000 ; 50 2,380 MBH(2380,000 btuh) The new heat treat
furnace has a heat input of 1,300 MBH (1,300,000 btuh) and is the only gas appliance in
the room Because the heat input of the new furnace is below the allowable room heat
input, the combustion air requirements will be met.

Gentlemen:
We wish to offer an alternate solution to the fire door requirement at the
Gerber Blades Addition at 14200 SW 72nd, Tigard, Oregon.
the original Permit was based on creating a separate building via fire doors
between the present plant and the addition. We wish to substitute three (3)
additional sprinkler heads at the openings. This is a considerable monetary
savings and, in verbal discussions, we have had a favorable reaction.
The plant is fully sprinklered including the addition. Due to its size as
a separate building with its separation, it did not require sprinklering. '
The project as a whole just narrowly misses being within the allowable area. 3
in a Type IIIJF-2, 9,000 square feet basic plus 3,000 square feet fire zone CJ
equals 12,000 square feet. Yards 3 sides times 100% equals 24,006 square feet
times 3 for sprinklers equals 72,000 square feet. Building total with addition
is 57,250 square feet but the office area of 5,472 square feet has stucco
exterior walls. So we classify the whole? unit was V N we start with 6,000
square feet basic and add 2,000 fire zone '•equals 8,000 square feet and double
for yards equals 16,000 square feet times 3 for sprinklers equals 48,000 square
feet. The building total with addition is 57,250 square feet less office area
which is separated by rated concrete wall , high parapet and door would be
51,778 square feet for the plant.

this request.

piercing. Wood frame construction requires firestopping of both vertical and horizontal draft openings at maximum
intervals of 10 feet.
12. Corridors require at least 6 feet in clear width. Drinking fountains or other equipment .nay not operate in a man-
ner which would obstruct the minimum 6-foot width.
13. Corridors serving patient bedr ;ms require at least 8 feet in width
14. Corridors require smoke barrier partitions with doors at 150-foot intervals.
15 Exit doors (rein lobbies, corridors and rooms with potential occupancies of 50 or more ars required to swing in the
direction of exit travel.
