VAV Control with VFD When a Variable Frequency Drive(VFD) option is desired, the unit will come with a field mounted, functionally tested, adjustable frequency drive which will safely vary the speed of the fan motor while allowing the motor to meet the dynamic requirements at the shaft of the motor and meet the system static. The VFD will be matched to the fan motor according to the FLA rating of the motor. The VFD will convert input line voltage to an adjustable frequency and voltage. A rectifier stage will convert fixed voltage, fixed frequency, AC line power to fixed DC voltage. The input power section shall utilize a full wave bridge design incorporating diode rectifiers. The rectifier shall be insensitive to phase rotation of the AC line. The DC voltage will be filtered. The VFD will change fixed DC voltage to variable frequency AC. The VFD section will utilize insulated gate bipolar transistors(IGBTs). Environmental: The VFD will be housed in an IP20 or IP21 enclosure and be designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of -10 to 45 degrees C minimum (14 to 104 F). The maximum relative humidity shall not exceed 95%at 40 C, non-condensing. The VFD is rated to operate at altitudes less than or equal to 3,300 ft. For altitudes above this, consult Trane for proper drive selection. FLD=Furnished by Trane U.S.Inc./Installed by Equipment Submittal Page 6 of 25 Others Frontier Split J81J13172 February 7,2019 Ratings: The VFD is designed to operate within the unit's voltage utilization range, which is+/-10%. The output carrier frequency of the drive no less than 8 kHz, and will be randomly modulated for low noise operation. The output frequency will be adjusted by the unit controller from 22 -60 Hz to meet duct static requirements. Protection: The VFD will meet UL requirements for motor over-current protection and UL 508C for controller containing power switching devices. The VFD will also provide internal protection from over-current, overheat and transient situations. External over-current protection will be provided by properly sized fuses placed on the line side of the VFD. Controls: The run command signal to the VFD will be provided by the unit controller. To maintain duct static pressure, the unit controller will also output a 0- 10 volt dc signal which will be the speed reference input for the VFD. Faults: Alarms resulting from loss of airflow will cause latching diagnostics on the unit controller. When latching diagnostics occur, the unit controller will require a manual reset. VFD Keypad Display: The VFD will have a five digit display which provides readout functions that include: output frequency, output voltage and output current. Harmonic Analysis (WARNING): The Trane Company does not assume responsibility for system harmonic performance. Harmonic performance anomalies can be a direct resultant of distribution system characteristics, not unit performance. A harmonic analysis can be performed, by the VFD manufacturer or qualified professional, based upon system documentation consisting of but not limited to one-line diagrams and specific distribution transformer information consisting of X/R, %Z, and KVA data. The data shall consist of but not be limited to total harmonic voltage distortion and total RMS current. The amount of harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling (PCC) is due to the distribution system characteristics(impedance of the source),the power source size relative to the AC drive load and other power switching devices such as computers, fax machines, copy machines, etc. The harmonic current magnitude and voltage distortion values can be estimated through computer modeling. If the resulting calculations determine that the harmonic distortion will be above the IEEE-519 specifications of 5%, isolation transformers or line reactors can be purchased from others to lower the harmonic levels. Variable Frequency Drive with Bypass When the VFD with Bypass option is desired, a VFD and Bypass control enclosure will be supplied with the unit for field installation. The VFD and bypass will ship, from the factory, completely wired and functionally tested. Properly sized motor protection shall be provided in both Drive and Bypass modes by a motor overload relay and fuses. Manual selection between Drive and Bypass modes is to be made by the operator at the unit Human Interface(HI). Full unit control and protection is provided in both the Drive and Bypass modes, with the exception of air-flow modulation for duct static control. When placed in the Bypass mode, the'VAV Box Drive Max"relay will be energized. This point can be used to sequence the VAV boxes top open in preparation for an across the line fan motor start. The Run Command signal,to the bypass motor starter, will be provided by the unit controller. While operating in bypass mode, temperature control will reference a user defined zone sensor and setpoint. High duct static protection must be active in Drive and Bypass modes of operation. Filters(Construction Throwaway) Two-inch (51 mm)construction throwaway filters are installed in the unit filter section. Filters may be removed from the left side of the unit. Unit Connection (Terminal Block) A terminal block is provided to bring power to the unit. Unit Interrupt Rating (Standard Short Circuit Current Rating-SCCR) Ventilation Control for Standard 2-Position Dampers(Interface Only) The unit will be provided with a 0-10 VDC control output suitable for controlling a field provided modulating actuator. In occupied modes of operation the output will be driven to maximum position. When the system is unoccupied, the output will be driven to minimum position. FLD=Furnished by Trane U.S.Inc./Installed by Equipment Submittal Page 7 of 25 Others Frontier Split J81J13172 February 7,2019 Dirty Filter Sensor A factory installed pressure switch is provided to sense the pressure differential across the filters. The switch is adjustable between 0.1"and 5.0"an is factory set at 0.9" (23mm)W.G. When the differential pressure exceeds the setpoint, contact closure will occur.A field installed indicator device is wired to the relay terminals to indicate when filter service is required. Contacts are rated for 115 VAC which are powered by a field provided transformer. Plenum High Static Switch A factory supplied sensor used to provide additional protection from over-pressurization of ductwork. This sensor should be located downstream from the discharge of the unit in the supply duct. This is a field installed accessory. Agency Listing: UL The unit shall be US/Canada Underwriter's Laboratory labeled and approved.
