From a telephone conversation with M:. Hart of your firm, we understand that the new walls do not extend to the ceiling line and, in fact, terminate approximately 3-1/2 to 4 feet below the existing ceiling. Further, we understand that there will be no ceiling in the dressing and fitting cubicals to the effect that the automatic sprinkler system will be able to provide full coverage without any modification. Inspection and approval of construction by this office is required prior to the cover of any new framing and again upon completion of the project and prior to occupancy by the tenant. Box 23635 Portland, Oregon 97223 Dear Mr. Roberts: Confirming our telephone conversation of July 14, 1982, as a result of inspecting the remodeling work in progress within this tenant space (formerly Aden & Josi ) , it was discovered that a portion of the oc:upancy is not adequately covered by automatic sprinkler protection as is re- quired. That is, the combustible blind space between the drop ceiling and the second story space at the rear of the occupancy has no sprinkler coverage. The primary fire safety feature of Washington Square Mall and the factor which permitted it to assune the proportions that it currently enjoys was full sprinkler coverage. And, blind spaces enclosed wholly or partly by ,xposed combustible construction as in floor/ceiling assemhlies are required to have full sprinkler coverage when the space formed by joists exceeds 6 inches in depth measured from the near edges of the joist to the opposite side of the space. Thus, it is required that the space under discussion be provided with sprinkler coverage. Accordingly, and by way of this letter, we are requesting that arrange- ments be made to abate this (apparent) deficiency as soon as practical .
