The plans for the installation of automatic sprinkler protection in the
modular classroom building which 1,1 being added to this educational
facility and which accompanied your letter of transmittal dated September
15 have been examined with reference to the regulations of this
jurisdiction.
From a telephone conversation with a member of your firm on Wednesday,
September 17, we have come away with the understanding that the water
supply will be taken from the existing "fire loop' which serves the
existing sprinkler system and the yard hydrants at the school . That is,
the existing fire department connection will pressurize this automatic
sprinkler system.
Subject to this stipulation the plans are hereby approved. One copy of the
drawings has been retained for the public record. The remaining copies, i

RE: Friedlander' s at Washington Square
The plan.; fur the remodeling of the Friedlander' s tenant space
and the Washington Square shopping mall have been examined with
reference to fire safety regulations . Listed as follows are
requirements which must be observed during the construction pro-
cess and for which we found no provisions in the submitted draw-
ings.
1 . All doors shown on the drawings must be openable from the
inside at all times for immediate exit without the use of a
key, special knowledge or effort.
2. Concerning the notes regarding automatic sprinkler ,Lec-
tion, full coverage is required. That is , each room and
space is provided with sprinkler coverage. Ceiling-mounted
automatic sprinkler heads must not be located closer than
4 inches (preferably not closer than 12 inches) and not more
• than 7 1/2 feet from any wall , partition or similar bulkhead.
3. Inspection and approval of construction by a representative
of this office is required prior to the cover of any new
framing elements following the installation of all utility
runs which will he concealed within wall and partition cavi-
ties. Also, upon completion of construction a "final " in-
spection by a representative of this office is required
primarily so that we may clear our records with reference to
compliance with fire safety requirements .
4. Upon completion of construction a certificate of occupancy
or other written instrument of approval must be obtained
from the Washington County Building Department .

Subject to the foregoing stipulations the plans are approved .
Incidentally, no fire-rated construction is required since the
Washington Square Mall is provided with complete sprinkler cover-
age , is one story in heighth and is surrounded by yards greater
than 60 feet in width.
In any case, it is my hope this letter will assist in clearing
the way for obtaining the necessary building and i ^lated permits .

Plans on the ref^renced project have been reviewed by this office and are
approved for construction subject to the following:
1. The rear exit door shall be openable from the inside without the use of
a key or any special knowledge or effort. Section 1304(c)
2. The shopping mall is non-rated Type V construction fully fire
sprinklered. Therefore 1 hour rated construction is not required.
3. Toilet rooms shall be provided with a mechanically operated exhaust
system capable of providing a complete change of air every 15 minutes.
Such systems shall be vented to the outside air and at the point of
discharge shall be at least 5 feet from any openable window. Reference
Section 705, S.B.C.
4. Firestopoing consisting of 2-inch (nominal) lumber, gypsum plasterboard
• or equivalent material is required to cut off all concealed draft
• openings (both vertical and horizontal) and shall form an effective
barrier between stories and between a top story and roof spare. It
shall be used in specific locations as follows:
a) In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling lines.
c) At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of double
stud walls, partitions and furred spaces.
d) Penetrations made in this prescribed firestopping to accommodate
wiring, plumbing, duct work and similar utility runs must be packed, in
a manner, which will effectively maintain the integrity of the
firestopping and cut off all concealed draft openings which could afford
a passage for flame. Reference Section 2516, S.B.C.
