It is the opinion of this office after we re-examined the plans and con-
sidered the potential hazard, that the equipment room he completely sep-
arated from the stockroom area: by oma-hour fire resistant construction,
,end all openings in the separation are to be protected with one-hour
rated fire resist: nt assemblies which shall he sell-closing.

The plans for the development of this tenant space were referred to this
office on October 31 , 1984. as a result, we offer the following comments.
1 . The plans for alteration of the existing automatic
sprinkler system must be submitted to and approved by
this office prior to any work taking place.
2. HVAC plans must he submitted to and approved by this
office before any installations can take place.
3. The exit corridor at the rear of this tenant space
must have a fire-resistive rating of not less than
one hour.
(ref: Sec. 3305 U.B.C. )
4. The walls of the rear exit corridor /nut be constructed
with studs no less than 2" '( 4' nominal size placed on
16 inch centers. Tne wall rover'lg must be 5/8-inch
type X gypsum wallboard or the equivalent and said walls
must extend from the fluor slab to t!.,e roof slab above.
Plans showing detailed drawings of the method of con- t
struction of this corridor must be submitted to and
approved by this office prior to any construction taking
place.
5. Door openings (indicated on the plans es door nos. 3
and 4) must be protected by a tight-fitting smoke and
craft control assembly having a fire protection rating
of nut less than 20 minutes when tested in accordance I '
with t'.B.C. Standard No. 43-2 without the hese stream r

test. The door and frame must hear an approved label
or other identification showing the rating thereof,
the name of the manufacturer and the identification of
the service conducting the inspection of materials and
workmanship at the factory during fabrication and
i.ssembly. Doors must be maintained self-closing or
must be automatic closing by actuation of a smoke
detector in accordance with Section 4306 (b) of the
Uniform Building_ Code. Smoke and draft control
assemblies must be provided with a gasket so installed
as to provide a 3eal where the door meets the stop on
both sides and across the top.

6. Fire dampers complying with the requirements of U.B.C.
Standard No. 43 must be installed and be readily
accessible for servicing in any ducts penetrating the walls
in the one-hour corridor required in item no. 4.
7. All insulation materials including facings, such as vapor
barriers or breather papers installed in roof-ceiling
assemblies, walls or attics must have a flame-spread rating
not to exceed 25 and a smoke density not to exceed 450 when
tested in accordarce with U.B.C. Standard No. 42-1 (Steiner
Tunnel Test).
(ref: Sec. 2516 U.B.C. )
8. Exit doors must be openable from the inside without the use
of a key, special knowledge or effort. However, this re-
quirement does not apply if there is a readily visible,
durable sign on or adjacent to the door stating THIS DOOR
TO REMAIN UNLOCKED DURING BUSINESS HOURS." The sign must be
in letters not less than one inc.: high on a contrasting back-
ground. The locking device must be a type that is readily
distinguishable as locked. Manually-operated edge or
surface-mounted flush bolts and surface bolts are prohibited.
When exit doors are used in pairs, and approved automatic
flush holts are used, the door leaf having the automatic
flush bolts must have no door knob or surface-mounted hard-
ware. The unlatching of any leaf must not require more
than one operation.

9. Exits must he illuminated at any tine the building is occupied
with a light having intensity of not less than 1 footcandle at
floor level .

10. Exit signs must be installed at renuired exit doorways
and where otherwise necessary to clearly indicate the
direction of egress. The color and »iyn of lettering,
arrows end other syrr.bols on exit signs must be in high
contras': with their background. Words on :he sign must
be in block letters 6 inches in height with a stroke of
not less than 3/4 inches. Signs must be internally or
externally illuminated by two electric lamps or must be
of ar approved self-luminous type. When the luminance
on the face of an exit sign is from an external source,
it must have an intensity of not less than 5.0 footcandle
from either lamp. Internally illuminated siiens must provide
equal luminance.

11. Approved plans bearing the stamps of the Washingto:r County
Building Department as well as this office must be main-
tained on the job site during all phases of construction
and be made available to building and fire inspectors
upon request.
(ref: Sec. 303 U.6.C.)
12. Plepse call f-ir inspections prior to the covering of any
interior framing element and again prior to the occupying
of this tenant space.

The plans submitted for this project show the construction of new
dressing rooms in the Brass Rail sales area and minor alterations
including electrical and fire protection of other areas of the first
floor level .
A locker room adjacent to the employee lunch room and dressing rooms at
the Brass Mur and Active Sports sales areas of the second floor are also
shown as new construction along with alteration of ele:triciA and fire
protection systems. Floor refinishing and carpet replacement are
proposed for selected areas through out *he store
Specifications call for approval of drawings for the alteration of fire
protection system by the f-.re marshal .

The plans for the alteration of Nordstrom Department Store have been
examined with reference to currently rippiicable fire safety regulations.
From informaticn gleaned at the Washington Count!' Building Department
it is our understanding that the building permit relates only to the
construction o' new dressing rooms for the women's tailored clothing
and Brass Rail section; the light coves in the ceiling of the fir :t
story in the Jewelry, Handbag and Individual Sportswear section; the
locker room alterations of tht second story; dressing rooms for the
Active Sportswear section in the second story along with minor related
tasks.
From perusal of the working arawings ana specifications, we understand
that the autorr!tic sprinkler protection will be altered to accommodate
the afore; i;te: alterations to the effect that full cover,ige is provided
and maintained.
Inspection and approval of construction by a representative of this
o'fice ,'ill he required prior to t"'i application of any finish material
to th' fraHng elec.ents of new walls and i;irtitions following the instal
lation of all 'Itility runs which will be currealed within the wail or
partition cavities. Also, upon completion of Loh:truction, an approval
of the finisied prod"ct by a representative of this oi`ice is required.
In addition to tr,:.t. a !ertificate of Occupancy or other written instru-
ment of o;nroval must hP u'otained from the Washih'ton Lou',ty Building
Department.

1) An exit sign shall be installed at the rear exit doorway from the
sales area. The sign shall be clearly vi sable with 6 inch high
block letters and a stroke not less than 3/4 inch wide. Reference
Section 3314(a) & (c), S.B.c.
2)T The rear exit door from the sales are shall be openable from the
sales area side without the use of a key or any special knowledge
or effort. Reference Section 3303(c), S.B.C.
3) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal) Limber, gypsum
plasterboard or equivalent material is required to cut off all
concealed draft openings (both vertical and horizontal) and shall
form an effective barrier between stories and between a top story
and roc.f space. It shall t,e used in specific locations as follows:
a) In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling
lines.
c) At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of
double stud walls, partitions and furred spaces.
d) Penetrations made in this prescribed firestopping to
accommodate wiring, plumbing, duct work and similar utility runs
must be packed, in a manner, which will effectively mwintain the
integrity of the firestopping and cut off all concealea draft
openings which could afford a passage for flame. Reference
Section 2516, S.B.C.
4) Supsended acoustical ceiling system shall be installed in
accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 47-18, shall he laterally
braced and designed to support all imposed loads. Reference
Section 4701(e), 4704, S.B.C.
5) Plans for the installation or alteration of the automatic sprinkler
system must be provided to and approved by Washington County Fire
Distr,ct #1 prior to such installation o- alteration.
6) Subject to the above listed items the plans for this project are

Confirming our telephone conversation of September 5 relating to the plans
for this occupancy within Washington Square, duo to the regulations in
force at the time Washington Souare was constructed and which continue to
Prevail , two means of exit are required from each retail sales outlet.
Exits are not permitted to pass through storage rooms or spaces used for
similar purposes; i .e. stockrooms. Even though such arrangements may
exist in certain older tenant spaces presently, and may have been given
tacit approval in the past, this does not justify perpetuation of the
violation as regards current and future tenant improvement projects.
Accordingly, and as we discussed, some sort of physical barrier must be
provided to separate the stockroom from the exit passageway which extends
through the stockroom area. This could take the form of a fence, low
wall or solid shelving which can In accessed only from the stockroom side
of the physical barrier which it creates.
Of course, the requirements as set forth in Washington County Plan Check
No. 5450 apply and one set of approved plans must be maintained on the
project site throughout all phases of construction and must he made avail-
able to building and fire inspectors for reference during required construction
inspections.
Inspection <:nd approval of construction by a representative of this office
is required:
a; prior to the cover of any new framing elements
following the installation of all utility runs
which will `)e concealed within wall and partition
cavities.
