The plans for the development of this tenant space were refer- to this
office on October 31 , 1984. As a result, we offer the following comments.
1 . The plans for alteration of tie existing automatic
sprinkler sys ..em must be suomitted to and approved by
this office prior to any work taking place.
2. HVAC plans must be submitted to and approved by this
office before any installations can take place.
3. The exit corridor at the rear of this tenant space
must have a fire-resistive rating of not less than
one hour.
(ref: Sec. 3305 U.b.`:. )
4. The walls of the rear exit corridor must to constructed
with suds no less that 2" X 4" nominal size placed on
16 inch centers. The wall covering must be 5/8-inch
type X gypsum wallboard or t'ie equivalent anct said walls
must extend from the fluor slab to the roof slab above.
Plans showing detailed drawings o! the met'iod of con-
struction of this corridor must t e submitted to and
approved by this office prior to any construction taking
place.
5. Door openings (indicated on Oe plans as door nos. 3
and 4) mist be protected by „ tight-fitting smoke and
draft control assembly having a fire protection rating
of not less Can 20 minute, when t^sted in accordance
with U.P.C. Standard No. t3-2 wit► out the hose stream

test. The door and frame must bear an approved label
or other identification showing the rating thereof,
the name of the manufacturer and the identification of
the serv'ce conducting the inspection of materials and
workmanship at the factory during fabrication and
avemb?y. Doors must be maintained self-closing or
mut be automatic closing by actuation of a smoke
detector in accordance with Section 4306 (b) of the
Uniform Building Code. a.Tioke and draft control
assemblies must be provided with a gasket so installed
as to provide a seal where the door meets the stop on
both sides and across the top.

6. Fire dampers complying with the requirements of U.B.C.
standard No. 43-7 must be installed and be readily
accessible for servicing in any ducts penetrating the walls
in the one-hour corridor required in item no. 4.
7. All Insulation materials in,;luding facings, such as vapor
barriers or breather papers installed in roof-ceiling
assemblies, walls or attics must have a flame-spread rating
not to exceed 25 and a smoke density not to exceed 450 when
tested in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 42-1 (Steiner
Tunnel Test).
(ref: Sec. 2516 U.B.C. )
8. Exit doors must be openable from the inside without the use
of a key, special knowledge or effort. However, this re-
quirement does not apply if there is a readily visible,
durable sign on or adjacent to the door stating "THIS DOOR
TO REMAIN IJNLOCKFD DURING BUSINESS HOURS." The sign must be
in letters not less than one inch high on a contrasting back-
ground. The locking device must be a type that is readily
distinguishable as locked. Manually-operated edge or
surface-mounted flush oolts ,od surface bolts are prohibited.
When exit doors are used in Lairs, and approved automatic
flush bolts are used, the door leaf having the automatic
flush bolts must have no door knob or surface-mounted hard-
ware. The unlatching of any leaf must not require more
tnan one operation.

9. Exits must be illuminated at any time the buildiry is occupied
with a light having intensity of not less than 1 footcandle at
Floor level .

10. Exit signs must be installed at required exit dcorways
and where otherwise necessary to clearly indicate the
direction of egress. The color and design of lettering,
arrows and other symbols on exit signs must he in high
contrast with their background. Words on the sign must
be it block letters 6 inches in height with a s:L'oke of
not less than 314 inches. Signs must be internally or
externally illuminated by two electric lamps or must be
of an approved self-luminous type. When the luminance
on the face of an exit sign is from an external source,
it must have an intensity of not less than 5.0 footcandle
from either lamp. Internally illuminated signs must provide
equal luminance.

11 . Approved plans bearing the stamps of the Washington County
Building Department as well as this office must be main-
tained on the job site during all phases of construction
and be made available to building and fire inspectors
upon request.
(ref: Sec. 303 U.B.C. )
12. Please call for inspections prior to the covering of any
interior framing element and again prior to the occupying
of this tenant space.
(ref: S'?c. 305 U.B.C. )
13. A Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained from the Wash-
ington County Building Department before this space :an be
occupied.

dressing rooms in the Brass Rail sales area and minor alterations
includirq electrical and fire protection of other areas of the first
floor level
A locker room adjacent to the employee lunch room and dressing rooms at
the Brass Plum and Active Sports sales areas of the second floor are also '
showr, as new construction along with alteration of electrical and fire
protection systems. Floor refinishing and carpet replacement are
proposed for selected areas through out the store.
Specifications call for approval of drawings for the alteration of fire
protection system by the fire marshal .
The F.'Ans for this project are approved as submitted and this office has
no object ,'s to the issuance of the building permits.

it is our understandinu that the building permit relates only to the
construction o' new dressing rooms for the women's tailored clothing
and Brass Rail section; the light coves in the ceilinn of the first
stogy in the Jewelry, Handbag and Individual Sportswear section; the
locker room alterations of the second story; dressing rooms for the
Active Sportswear section in the second story along with minor . elated
tasks.

1) An exit sign shall be installed at the rear exit door,vay from the
sales area. The sign shall be clearly vi sable with 6 inch high
block letters and a stroke not less than 3/4 inch wide. Reference
Section 3314(a) & (c), S.B.c.
2)T The rear exit door from the sales are shall be openable from the
sales area side without the use of a key or any special knowledge
or effort. Reference Section 3303(c), S.B.C.
3) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal) lumber, gypsum
plasterboard or equivalent material is required to cut off all
concealed draft openings (both vertical and horizontal) and shall
form an effective barrier between stories and between a top story
and roof space. It shall be used in specific locations as follows:
a) In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling
lines.
c) At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of
double stud walls, partitions and furred spaces. 1
d) Penetrations made in this prescribed firestopping to
accommodate wiring, plumbing, duct work and similar utility runs
must be packed, in a manner, which will effectively maintain the
integrity of the firestopping and cut off all concealed draft
openings which could afford a passage for flame. Reference
Section 2516, S.B.C.
4) Supsended acoustical ceiling system shall be installed in
accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 47-18, shall be laterally
braced and designed to support all imposed loads. Reference
Section 4701(e), 4704, S.B.C.
5) Plans for the installation or alteration of the automatic sprinkler
system must be provided to and approved by Washington County Fire
District 01 prior to such installation or alteration.
6) Subject to the above listed items the plans for this project are
approved for construction, i-isofar as the Land Development
Services Division requirements apply.

Lonfirming our telephone conversation of September 5 relating to the plans
for this occupancy within Washington Square, due to the regulations in
force at the time Washington Square wus constructed and which continue to
orev.iil , two means of exit are required from each retail sales outlet.
Exits are not permitted to pass through storage rooms or spaces used for
similar our�oses; i .e. stockrooms. Even though such arrangements may
exist in certain older tenant spaces presently, a d m. , have been given
tacit approval in the past, this does not justify ,,erpetuation of the
viclation as regards current and future tenant improvement projects.
Accordingly, and as we discussed, some sort of r 'ysic harrier must be
provided to separate the stockroom from the exit pas! ,,ev. y which extends
through the stc-'., uom area. This could take the form o, a fence, low
wall or solid shelving which can be accessed only fror the stockroom side
of the physical barrier which it creates.
Of course, the requirements as set forth in Washington County Plan Check
No. 5450 apply and one set of approved plans must be maintained on the
project site throughout all phase!, of construction and must be made avail •
able to building and fire inspectors for reference during required construction
inspections.
Inspection and approval of construction by a representative of this office
is required:
