We have reviewed your plans for the remodel of the above store with regard to
our fire regulations. The following are items required for approval of your
plans.
1 . Doors are to be openable from the interior without the use of a key,
special knowledge or effort.
2. Wood frame construction required to be firestopped at 10-foot intervals
horizontally and vertically.
3. Automatic Fire sprinkler protection to be maintained above and below
ceiling.
4. Required inspections after framing is completed and utility runs are
made. Holes made in firestopping are required to be plugged in a
manner to prevent the spread of fire. Prior to the occupancy, a
Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained from the Washington County
Building Department.
Subject to the above items, approval of your plans is hereby given.

2) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal ) 'umber, gypsum p:asterboard
or equivalent material is required to cut off all concealed draft openings
(both vertical and horizontal ) and shall form an effectiv? barrier between
stories and between a top story and roof space. It shall be used in
specific locations as follows:
- In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling lines.
- At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of o uble
stud walls, partitions and furred spaces.
- At maximum vertical or 10 feet where wood stud walls and partitions
exceed 10 feet in height before intersecing with a ceiling or floor
line.
- Penetrations made in this prescribed firestopping to accommodate wiring,
plur,.bing, duct work and similar utility runs must be packed, following
the installation of said utility runs, in a manner which will effectively
maintain the integrity of the firestopping and cut off all concealed

The plans for the remodeling project to accommodate the above-named tenantti .
have been exarined with reference to fire safety regulations. Listed as
follows are requirements which must be observed during the course of con- ;,.Y
struction or prior to opening for business and for which we found no specific
provisions contained in the submitted drawinos. �.
1 . full sprinkler coverage is required. Concealed combustible
spaces must be provided with full protection. 8y way of
contrast, however, noncombustible spaces in which no com-
bustible material is installed or stored, are not required
to De provided with sprinkler protection.
2. Spaces formed by combustible furring strips must be fire-
stopped at ceiling lines. Penetrations made in this
prescribed firestopping to accommodate wiring, plumbing,
duct ..ork and similar utility runs must be packed, follow-
ing the installation of said utility runs, in a manner
!;1 which will effectively maintain the integrity of the fire-
stopping and cut off all concealed draft openings which
could afford a passage for flame.
3. Exits and the way of access to exits through the rear of
the tenant space to the exterior must be well identified
by exit signs having letters not less than 6 inches in
height with the principal strokes of each letter being
not less than 3/4 inch in width.

5. One set of approved plans must be maintained on the project
site throughout all phases of construction and must be made
available to building and fire inspecto'-s for reference

6. Inspection and approval of construction by a representative
of this office is required:

b) upon completion of construction and prior to open- ng
for business.
7. Prior to opening for business a Certificate of Occupancy or
other written instrument of approval must be obtained from
the Washington County Building Department.
Subject to the foregoing stipulations and conditions the plans are hereby

1) Exit signs shall be installed at the rear exit doorway from the sales
area and at the rear corridor exit. The signs shall be clearly visible
with 6 inch high block letters and a stroke net less than 3/4 inch
wide. Reference Section 3314(a) & (c), S.B.C.
2) Doors must be fitted with a type of locking or latching device which
will permit the opening of the door from the inside without the use of a
key, special knowledge or effort, except that exterior exit doors may be
fitted with a keyed locking device which is readily distinguishable as
locked and there is a readily visible, durable sign on or adjacent to
the door stating this door to remain unlocked during busi:ress hours.
3) The rise and run of the stairway extension shall match the existing and
be within the code limitations. Reference Section 3306(c), S.B.C.
4) The doors to the landing at the bottom of the stairway cannot swing into
the landing. A door swinging over a landing shall not reduce the width
of the landing to less than one-half its required width at any position
r in its swing nor by more than 7 inches when fully open. When doors open
over landings, the landing shall have a length at not less than 5 feet.
Reference Section 3304(h) & 3306(q), S.B.C.
5) Handrails shall be placed not less than 30 inches nor more than 34
inches above the nosing of treads. They shall be continuous the full
length of the stairs. At least one handrail shall extend no less than 6
inches beyond the top and bottom risers and ends shall be returned or
shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals.
Handrails projecting from a wall shall have a space of not less than
1-1/2 inches between the wall and the handrail . The handgrip portion of
handrails shall not be less than 1-1/4 inches nor more than 2 inches in
cross-sectional dimension and shall have a smooth surface with no sharp
corners. Reference Section 3306, S.B.C.
6) Where there is enclosed usable space under stairs, the walls and soffits
of the enclosed space shall be protected on the enclosed side as
required for one-hour fire-resistive construction. Reference Section
3306, ,.B.C.
7) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal) lumber, gypsum plasterboard
or equivalent material is required to cut off all concealed draft
openings (troth vertical and horizontal ) and shall form an effective
barrier between stories and between a tap story and roof space. It
shall be used in specific locations as follows:
a) In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling lines.
