We have reviewed your plans for the remodel of the above store with regard to
our fire regulations. The following are items required for approval of your
plans.
1 . Doors are to be openahle from the interior without the use of a key,
special knowledge or effort.
2. Wood fame construction required to be firestopped at 10-foot intervals
horizontally and vertically.
3. Automatic fire sprinkler protection to be maintained above and below
ceiling.
4. Required inspections after framing is completed and utility runs are
made. Holes made in firestopping are required to be plugged in a
manner to prevent the spread of fire. P-ior to the occupancy, a
Certificate of Occupancy must he obtained from the Washington County
Building Department.

1 ) Doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special
knowledge or effort. Reference Section 3303, SBC.
2) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal ) lumber, gypsum plasterboard
or equivalent material is required to cut off all concealed draft openings
(both vertical and horizontal ) and shall form an effective barrier between
stories and between a top story and roof space. It shall be used in
specific locations as follows:
- In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling lines.
- At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of double
stud walls, partitions and furred spaces.
- At maximum vertical of 10 feet where wood stud walls and partitions
exceed 10 feet in height before intersecing with a ceiling or floor
line.
- Penetrations made in this prescribed firestupping to accommodate wiring,
plumbing, duct work and similar utility runs must be packed, following
the installation of said utility runs, in a manner which will effectively
maintain the integrity of the firestopping and cut off all concealed
draft openings which could afford a passage for flame. Reference Section
2517, SBC.

Thr plans for the remodeling project to accommodate the above-named tenant
have been examined with reference to fire safety regulations . Listed as
follows are requirements which must be observed during the course of con-
struction or prior to opening for business and for which we found no specific
provisions contained in the submitted drawinos.
1 . Fufl sprinkler coverage is required. Concealed combustible
spaces must be provided with full protection. By way of
' lill
contrast, however, noncombustible spaces in which no com-
bustible materia' is installed or stored, are not required
to oe provided with sprinkler protection.
2. Spaces formed by combustible furring strips must be fire-
stopped at ceiling lines. Penetrations made in this
prescribed firestopping to accomodate wiring, plumbing,
duct work and similar utility runs must be packed, follow-
ing the installation of said uti 'ity runs , in a manner
which will effectively maintain the integrity of the fire-
stopping and cut off all concealed draft openings which
could afford a passage for flame.
3. Exits and the way of access to exits through the year of
• the tenant space to the exterior must be well identified
by exit signs having letters not less than 6 inches in
height with the principal strokes of each letter being
Inot less than 3/4 inch in width.

4. All doors shown on the drawings must he openable from the
"inside" for immediate exit without the use of a key,
special knowledge or effort.
5. One set of approved plans must be maintained on the project
~ site throughout all phases of construction and must be made
available to building and fire inspectors for reference
during required construction inspections.
6. Inspection and approval of construction by a representative
of this office is required:
a) prior to the cover of any interior framiny or furring.
b) upon completion of construction and prior to opening
for business.
7. Prior to opening for business a Certificate 01 Occupancy or
other written instrument of approval must be obtained from
the Washington County Building Department.

1) Exit signs shall be installed at the rear exit doorway from the sales
area and at the rear corridor exit. The signs shall be clearly visable
iwith 6 inch high block letters and a stroke not less than 3/4 inch
i wide. Reference Section 3314(a) & (c), S.B.C.
?) Doors must be fitted with a type of locking or latching device which
will permit the opening of the door f om the inside without the use of a
key, special knowledge or effort, except that exterior exit doors may be
fitted with a keyed locking device which is readily distinguishable as
locked and there is a readily visible, durable sign on or adjacent to

5) Handrails shall be placed not less than 30 inches nor more than 34
inches above the nosing of treads. They shall be continuous t;le full
length of the stairs. At least one handrail shall extend no less than 6
inches beyond the top and bottom ris.:rs and ends shall be returned or
shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals.
Handrails projectinc from a wale shall have a space of not less than

6) Where there is enclosed usable space under stairs, the walls and soffits
of the enclosed space shall be protected on the enclosed side as
required for one-hour fire-resistive construction. Reference Section

! 7) Firestopping consisting of 2-inch (nominal ) lumber, gypsum plasterboard
or equivalent material is required to cut off all concealed draft '
openings (both vertical and horizontal ) and shall form an effective
barrier between stories and between a top story and roof space. It
shall be used in specific locations as follows:
a) In all wood-framed walls and partitions at floor and ceiling lies.

studwalls and partitions; also, at the top and the bottom of the
stairway.
• c) At maximum horizontal intervals of 10 feet in the case of double
stud walls, partitions and furred spaces.

8) Plans for the installation or alteration of the automatic sprinkler
system must be provided to and approved by Washington County Fire
District #1 prior to such installation or alteration.
9) Subject to the above listed items the plans for this project are
approved for construction, insofar as the Land De,ielopment Services
Division requirements apply.
