Confirming odr telephone conversation of July 14, 1982, we have examined the
plans for the alterations to this building (formerly knoi;n as the Magic Pan)
with respect to currently applicable fire safety regulations and find them
to be acceptable in this regard. However, from our discussion we understand
that you will be installing a new "grease" hood and exhaust system. Before
this installation is made we must have complate plans therefore including
plans for the required fire extinguishing system.
Major points - ch must be observed with respect to the hood and exhaust
system are:
1 . Adequate make-up air which is electrically interlocked
with the exhaust fan.
2. The make-up air must be tempered if the exhaust exceeds
2500 cubic feet per minute.
3. The fire extinguishing system must be interlocked with
the cooking equipment to the effect that if the fire
extinguishing system is activated, all fuel and power
to the cooking equipment is shut off.

This letter will confirm that we have examined the plans for the fabrication
and installation of the "grease" hood and exhaust system with integral fire
extinguishing system. We find the plans to be acceptable with respect to
currently applicable fire safety regulations.
However, we must again emphasize, as we did in our letter to yot' of July 14,
1982, that the fire extinguishing s!'stem,when activated,must snut off all
fuel and electrical power to the cocking equipment under the hood. Further,
a trip telt of the system must be made,following its installation and prior
to placing the kitchen in operation, `n the presence of a representative of
this office.
We trust this letter will assist in c'earing the way for the further develop-
ment of your project and ultimately th+ opening and successful operation of
your rant. Please let us know it we can be of service in any other

Suh�•,i INVALIDATI(N OF BUILDING r'ERMIT4
The Oregon State Structural Specialty Code, Section 305(A) requires, "All
constru"tion or work for which a permit is required shall be subject to
inspection by the Building Official." The responsib;lity ,o call for
inspections rests with the applicant. Section 305(B), "It shall be the duty
of the person doing the work authorized by a permit to notify the Building
Official that such work is ready for inspection P. shall be the duty of
the person requesting any inspections required by this Code to provide access
to and means for proper inspection of such work."
The Structural Specialty Code, Section 303(0), deals with the expiration of
building permits: "Every building permit issued by the Building Official
under the provisions of this Code shall expire by limitation and become null
and void if the building ur work authorized by such permit is not commenced
within 180 days from the date of such permit, ur if the building or work
authorized by such permit is suspended or abandoned at any time after the work
has commenced for a period of 180 days."
The above-referenced permit has not had an inspection request for in excess of
twelve months and is presumed to be inactive and the permit void.

2. The door schedule which appeared on the drawings referred to this office 1
rdid not indicate the hardware yroup proposed for the doors listed therein.
Exit door sl5 may he fitted with standard knob operated hardware which is
openable from the inside et all times for immediate exit without the use
of a key, special knowledge or effort. Door #4 must be fitted with approved
panic hardware. Doors #1 (pair) may be fitted with either paric hardware,
or a key operated deadlock. However, if a key operated deadlock is employed,
1 it must be of the "indicating type" and there must be posted on or adjacent
to the doorway a sign reading "This Door Must Remain Unlocked During Business
1 Hours" in letters not less than one inch in height on a contrasting background.
Flush, edge or surface bolts or any other type of device is prohibited and
when the "active leaf" is unlocked, the "inactive leaf" must be free to swing.

3. Regarding Section 6100 of the specifications concerning fire stopping, penetra-
1, • tions nude to accommodate wiring, plumbing, duct work and similar utility runs
must be packed, following the installation of said utility runs, in a manner
which will maintain the integrity of the fire stopping and effectively cut off
all concealed draft openings. In addition to the fire stopping prescribed in
the specifications, in all wood framed walls and partitions, fire stopping is '
not only required at the floor and ceiling lines, but at maximum vertical and
horizontal intervals of 10 ft. (as in the case of double stud walls and par-
. titions, "plumbing walls," etc. ! to the effect that no combustible concealed
space exceeds 10 ft. in maximum dimension without a barrier to the passage of
flame.

4. Access, through the ceiling, into each attic space exceeding 30 inches in
maximum vertical clear height is required. The access opening must measure
not less than 22" by 30" and 30" of clear headroom above the opening is pre-

Regarding the project description, the attic height varies due to the variation
in the roof ccnfiguration. Tne maximum height of the unheated attic space is roughly
8 ft. Both an attic and a "cock-loft" occur in this building due to suspended cell-
ings and decorative roof structures.
Although two exits are indicated on the project description aoove, three exits
1F will be provided. That is, two public exits serving the dining and lounge spaces
and one private or service/entranc:e exit serving the kitchen area.

ing system to serve all (three) yreise hood and exhaust ducts. The specifications
further prescribe that operation of the fire sJppression system, in each instance,
must automatically (as is required) shut down the cooking equipment served by that
grease hood and exhaust duct.
