We treat urban spaces not simply as conduits of movement, canvases for best practices or organizers of private investment, but as the primary experience of the city, the reason people want to be there. Davis Square is a thriving place for community and commerce, ' - but its public realm doesn't always reflect the importance of public life, which inhibits this place from becoming even more vibrant. In 2016,the City of Somerville hired Gehl to help develop a Public Space Plan for Davis —v' Square. We began this project with short-term pilot projects to mow test out changes to Davis Square's public realm. Short-term pilot projects are an invaluable tool for reimaginging public space.Quick,cost- effective and easy to implement, urban interventions test out improvements while directly engaging community members in rethinking their public realm. »k Gehl facilitated abrainstorming session with City staff to envision the prototype ideas, and three light interventions were implemented during the summer. Gehl observed how these changes impacted the public realm, learning that: (1)there was a clear demand for more public spaces and(2)that a slip lane in the Square could be closed without any major auto traffic back up or confusion. ,T• —, After the pilots were conducted, x Gehl lead a Davis Square Public Space Planning Charrette, helping the City cultivate a bold vision for a people-first Davis Square. Momentum has been building since the introduction of the City Center Urban renewal plan (2006-2017) which intends to catalyze investments in revitalization of the Downtown, recognize the value of natural resources as amenities, contribute to a special sense of place and identity, and make downtown Tigard a place where people want to be. The City of Tigard is interested in engaging Gehl to conduct a targeted Public Space Public Life study that will engage the public in furthering the vision for the downtown as well as provide important public life data to benchmark progress towards downtown revitalization. The insights gained from this study will be used to generate design and programming guidelines to inform the RFP for Universal Plaza. Gehl PSPL data is added to a client- it supports in order to develop strategies to shape accessible GIS database of cities where we have tracked place iteratively over time. This measure/test/refine comparable data. We use this tool to draw comparisons approach relieves the burden of having to solve all to streets and spaces around the world that can inform problems in the planning stage. Instead, we help cities, new design decisions locally. communities and developers "plan by doing", using actions that are supported by data, a collective vision of a vibrant public realm, and a clear strategy to take successive steps towards improvement. The Gehl Public Space Public Life Study (PSPL) The result of more than 40 years of research and development, Gehl's PSPL is a comprehensive ethnographic analysis of the relationship between human activity and the built environment in the public realm. Working across a block or an entire city, we use volunteers and digital tools to gather fine-grained, human-scale data, coupled with a project's public engagement process. Gehl uses pedestrian count and stationary activity surveys to understand where and how 25 WorkpLan Team Organization The project will be serviced from Gehl's San Francisco office. John Bela, Gehl Director, will be the Project Director. Alex Schucknecht will be Project Manager and Aja Jeanty will be Project Designer.
