06/11/1979 - Minutes MINUTES Tigard Library Board June 11, 1979
Call to Order The regular meeting of the Tigard Library Board was called
and Roll Call to order by Chairman Betsy Chick at 7:35 PM.
All members present.
Reports: The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The
monthly report was noted.
Old Business:
Serial Levy Contract Jim Sidey and Yvonne Burgess reported on the county meeting
they had attended for discussion of the 1979-80 serial levy
contract. It was moved by Dick Bendixsen that the Board
Motion make a formal statement (attached) supporting the contract
as written. George Vaternick, second. The motion was
unanimously passed. Librarian was instructed to send copies
to the Washington County Board of Commissioners, all city
councils and all libraries. The statement will be read at
the next serial levy committee meeting.
Book Complaint: More complete information has been requested, but not
received.
SB 31 Librarian reported that the bill for state aid has gone to
joint Ways and Means Committee but there has been no action.
Building Plans The Board read the memorandum from Doris Hartig indicating
Tigard's need to show support and feasibility for a new
library facility if there is to be any chance for receiving
grants from foundations. Librarian reported that the Friends
of the Library plan to start a building fund. The Friends of
the Library have requested that they meet together with the
Board at the July meeting. Board indicated its support of
the Friends' plan and welcomed their presence at the July
meeting. Librarian was asked to get information on possible
purchase and renovation of the present structure to include
the upper floor.
Computer-up-date Information in monthly report was noted. Further discussion
was postponed.
New Business:
Loss of Books Librarian reported increase in number of books being taken
from the Library, attributing much of it to the side .doors to
library which must remain open because of fire regulations.
Board instructed Librarian to explore possbility of installing
alarm system on doors and modifying windows to permit air
circulation during warm weather. Librarian also pointed out
that some of the more "attractive" books, e.g. , motor repair
manuals, will be kept at the circulation desk.
Book Fines: Librarian requested that a "Conscience Kitty" be set up at
desk to encourgage donations to the library from those whose
books are returned late, but do not fall within the "fine"
period. Discussion was postponed to next meeting in view of
Friends -of the-Library _plans .to raise money for a building,
Hiring of Clerk Librarian announced that.a part-time Library Clerk position
has been announced. Resumes will be accepted through June 22.
Position will be filled July 2.
Volunteer Picnic Librarian announced that there will be a picnic for volunteers
and families at Cook Park, June 29. Members of the Board and
families were invited to attend.
