It was determined today that all of the safety items listed in the Fire Marshal ' s letter dated 27 August, 1974 are satisfactorily operational in the spaces presently occupied, with the following exceptions : 1. The sensitivity of the flow switch in the fire sprinkler line must - be adjusted since it is currently ringing the bell with pressure cn the line and no flow. 2. This same sprinkler alarm must be inter-tied with the interior alarm bells. At present it rings The outside bell only. • 3. The School District is to make arrangements with the telephone company to interconnect the alarm system with the Fire Department . It is understood that I will contact Jack Palmer as soon as the sprinkler alarm is functioning correctly and hopefully this can be accomplished within the next two days. It is understood that there will be some extended delay in the interconnection with the Fire Department . Box 286 Tualatin, Oregon 97062 Re : Tigard Junior High School Dear Russ : In reference to the code requirement for an alternate power source on exit lights in class "B" occupancies, we are proposing the following revisions to the installation at the referenced project . The class "B" occupancy area would be the main gymnasium which is Plan Room #45 . In this room we would change the three exit lights to Dual-Lite Model #WGBBSG which contains a battery operated emergency exit sign. We will also install two Dual-Lite battery packs (Model #ALCS-30-3) with spotlights focused on the exit doors in case of a power failure. Using two battery packs , all exits will be lighted in the event that the motorized curtain is in use. Although the upper gymnasium, which is Plan Room #110 is not a class "B" occupancy, we have recommended to the School District that a Dual-Lite battery pack also be installed in this space since it is a windowless area and the battery pack will provide spotlights at the exit corridors during a power outage . We have received quotations from the contractor for the above described installation, but will wait to proceed with the change until we have received your acceptance of this proposed installation. Also in attendance was Chuck Kingston, Robin Fritchman, Al Pietla, Wally Brandt, Murray Findley and the job electrician. Purpose of today ' s inspection tour was to obtain a conditional use permit so the School District could occupy the two gymnasiums, the band and choral room, the boys and girls locker rooms and the shops. The electrician and Murray testified that the fire alarm system is operational from all pull stations, but it was decided not to activate the alarm since it is tree desire of the Fire Marshal that an actual fire drill be executed when the alarms are tested. This will be rescheduled later this week, or next week, when we will hopefully have some better weather. After the tour Mr. Austin was satisfied that the spaces are acceptable for conditional occupancy and he will issue a permit to the School District . These items still in need of correction or verification, before final acceptance by the City and the Fire Marshal , are as follows : 1 . The emergency battery-powered lighting system, in the two gymnasiums, is on order but will not be installed for approximately 11/2 months. At this time, the standard exit signs are in operation in the gymnasium. 2. The recessed fire hose cabinets are not installed in the main gymnasium due to late delivery of one of the cabinets. Two temporary fire extinguishers are in place at the cabinet locations . 3. The sprinkler system is activated, however the flow switch which triggers the inside and outside bells is de-energized due to the accidental tripping of these alarms by the pressure fluctuation in the water lines. The mechanical consulting engineer, and the mechanical contractor, are working on a recommended solution to this problem. The T.J. I. all had holes drilled through them for ventilation no longer leaving each joist channel a separate area. This building is required to be fully sprinklered by the 1979 edition of L'BC. NFPA allows joist spaces to be unsprinklered provided the joist spaces are sheathed top and bottom and channels do not communicate. Because of the requirement for ventilation from these joist spaces, because the roof deck was already in place, and because of the cost to remove the roofing to install additional venting, we asked that the holes in TJ1 ' s be blocked to create as small a communicating area as possible but still provide adequate ventilation. 2. A second layer of Type X gypsum board was asked for on the ceilings of the restrooms and janitor' s closet adjacent unsprinklered class rooms where 2-hour fire resistive area separation walls were required. This was asked in lieu of removing the ledger attached to the wall of the existing construction which should have been upgraded to not lss than 2-hour fire resistive construction.
