GDI Project: Polygon-151-04 Prepared By: Daniel Stai
Project Name: River Terrace East- Multifamily Date: 4/4/18
Location: 13240 SW Roy Rogers Rd., Tigard Report#: 46
Arrival: 1405 Departure: 1535
Weather: Overcast, 50s Permit#: TBA
Site Visit Requested By: Sam (Polygon) Met With (on site): Sam (Polygon)
Purpose: Density Test Footing Backfill in Building B and Observe Subgrade for Buildings D&E
Outstanding Issues: FR-26 (12/22)Soft soil remains-pond
Building 8 Footing Backfill
Upon arrival, Sam directed me to building B that crews had over excavated an area of soft subgrade and replaced
with 2 feet of crushed rock on the west side of the building in footing area. Crews had used% inch minus crushed
rock from Baker Rock Resources placed in two lifts and compacted using a large walk behind diesel plate compactor
to fill the area. I used a Troxler 3430 nuclear density gauge to evaluate compaction at the surface of the crushed
rock in the footing area with tests compared to lab produced maximum dry density value of 127.2pcf at 12.6
percent optimum moisture content. Area tested exceeded compaction recommendations of 95 percent of the
maximum dry density. I observed a small amount of soil covering the rock in places in the footing that I
recommended to crews that it be removed before concrete forms are installed.
Buildings D&E Footing S bgra
Sam also asked me to observed footing subgrade in buildings D and E. Crews were still actively digging building E
to subgrade elevation at the time of my visit. Subgrade soil appeared to consist of brown silt with the upper
footings on the north side being founded on fill. I used a'A inch diameter steel "T" probe to evaluate relative
consistency of the subgrade. Subgrade was generally observed to be stiff based on resistance to penetration of the
probe.
Crews had covered most of the subgrade cut to grade with a few inches of loose crushed rock. I recommended that
this be keyed in to help prevent the subgrade from becoming disturbed from wet weather. They said that they could
use a large diesel plate to compact the rock. I recommended that they use something smaller, such as a small
gasoline plate compactor, to key in the crushed rock and prevent subgrade disturbance from the heavy compactor.
Based on observations and testing, footing backfill density tested and subgrade probed today, as indicated on the
attached site plan, are being prepared in general accordance with project requirements provided contractor follows
our geotechnical recommendations.
