Responding to Individuals in Crisis Is Part of
the fob for Tigard Police Officers
"When individuals are in crisis, it is law enforcement who gets called,"says Cmdr.
James McDonald, who oversees the Tigard Police Department's patrol unit.
Unfortunately, resources needed to address underlying causes of mental illness are
not readily available, which can lead to a cycle of escalating behaviors, police calls
and emergency room visits. In January the department received 120 calls for service
related to mental health issues; these incidents, combined with service calls related
to homelessness, amounted to 160 hours of police time or one full-time position.

Mayor's Corner: Celebrating Spring in Tigard
After a cold, wet and rather dreary winter, I, for one, am grateful that spring is finally
here—our community has so much to celebrate! This month the Tigard Public Library will
honor its 250+ volunteers at the annual Volunteer Recognition Event on April 22. In May
we'll have Public Works Day. In June it's time for seconds! We'll have the Second Tigard

Tigard's Commitment to Local Job Creation
One of the challenges of a growing city is finding ways to help people live closer to where
they work. Despite lacking adequate resources, the City of Tigard has been finding creative
ways to fund projects designed to attract industry and private investment to the area and,

Budget Committee Begins Review
The Tigard Budget Committee will hold its first meeting for the Fiscal Year 2018-2019
Proposed Budget on April 23, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Public Works Auditorium (8777
SW Burnham St.). The public is invited. The proposed budget outlines how the city will
invest its resources and provide a fiscal roadmap to meet the community's essential needs.

Tigard Park and Recreation Advisory Board Seeks Members
Apply today to join the group of dedicated individuals working to provide quality parks and
recreation services in Tigard. People interested in serving on the board are encouraged to
submit a Citizen Committee Interest Application. The committee is seeking three new

City Council Recap for March
The City Council held a public hearing on proposed code amendment changes to the city's
system development charges (SDCs). The council adopted the revised ordinance. The
council also held a workshop discussion of the Southwest Corridor Plan with Community

Rules of the Road: Traffic School Diversion Programs
Many Oregon courts, including the Tigard Municipal Court, offer diversion programs to
eligible drivers for minor-traffic violations. The current diversion program was authorized
by the Tigard City Council in 2015. The program is popular, with more than 1,100
participants last year. Nearly nine out of 10 participants successfully completed all

Celebrate Curtis Tigard's 109th birthday at the John Tigard House on Saturday, April 14,
from 1 to 3 p.m. Residents are invited to share birthday cake with Tigard's oldest
resident—the grandson of Wilson and Mary Ann Tigard, who arrived in the area by wagon

The Tigard Chamber of Commerce on April 27 hosts the annual Shining Stars Community
Awards Celebration, now in its 44th year. The ceremony recognizes and honors Tigard
citizens who demonstrate excellence and community leadership in business, volunteer
