Youth Forum
Wednesday, May 21, 2003
Present: Liz Newton, Chief Bill Dickinson, Susan Stark Haydon, Ed Wegner, Margaret Barnes,
Damn Marks, Bill Monahan, Rich Carlson, Ken Scheckla, Louise Meyers, Dusky
Steyaert, Mayor Jim Griffith
The meeting was opened by Liz Newton at 7:36 a.m.
Youth Council-- Liz reported on the interviews of the Youth Council applicants. Four of the
applicants were not able to make their interview. Rich was involved in the interviews, he reported on
the process followed and how the interviews went. Now, a parents meeting is being scheduled for
June 2. Liz has talked with most of the parents about what we are planning to do with the students.
Liz asked for participation by other Forum members. An initial activity of the Youth Council likely will
be the planning for a Youth Forum in early fall.
Youth Forum Membership Division— Liz reported that she contacted Youth Forum members who
have not attended recently. Some members said that the time of the meeting is an issue. They
would like to stay involved, probably with a role in the Youth Council. Liz asked for interviews of
groups that should be asked to participate. Youth league representatives will be approached by Ed to
participate. Contact will be made with the local ministerial group to see if any church groups wish to
participate. Rich suggested Assistant Coach Tim Zeller from Tigard High School who owns the gym
on Main Street could be a good contact. Contact will be made with the Chamber and Middle Schools
to attempt to develop contacts and participation. Ed suggested that Ed Morris, a staff member of the
Portland School District, who is retiring and experienced with after school programs could be
interested. Also, newly elected school board member Art Rutkin will be involved.
Skate Park—Rich reported that a meeting of the Skate Park Committee was held last night to see the
proposed site. The group liked the site. They then discussed ways to raise funds, starting with the
Optimist Club event. Another meeting is set for June 3`d at 7:30 p.m. at Tigard Water District. Lou
Ogden, Helen Cain and Paul Hennon from Tualatin all will attend to advise how Tualatin carried out its
effort. Rich noted that a sign is needed at the site. He has identified a person to do a sign and T-
shirt.
Police Activities League— Damn and Dusky passed out information about some camps they have
planned. Darrin introducing what the league is doing. He was hired as the Director of Activities and
Development. A series of summer programs with police officers involved are being offered to low
income youths. Later in the summer is a 5 week sports camp at PSU. About 95 staff members are
hired who teach a variety of sports activities. A Youth Center is located in Gresham. Dusky is with
the Sherwood Center.
PAL is interested in participating in Tigard or combining some Tigard efforts with those in Sherwood.
Dusky noted they bought some materials for Tigard's DARE Camp and will be helping out. They
would like to be more involved in DARE Camp next year and also to participate in after school
programs. Susan reported that Duncan McCracken, a middle school teacher, is working on
developing some after school programs with grant funds. The gym/cafeteria building at CF Tigard
may become available for after school programs in the future.
Dusky is working with Sheryl Huiras, of the Police Department, to see if Tigard kids can be included in
Sherwood's program which are offered at the Y for late night programs, etc. Susan suggested that
Club Sports be contacted to see if any possibilities exist to use those facilities.
The annual fee in Sherwood is$15. PAL receives free tickets donated from a large number of
organizations(theater, baseball games, etc.) The PAL works out special arrangements with large
families to make the program affordable.
PAL would like to meet with Form participants to get ideas and develop after school programs. They
will schedule a time to meet with the School District to discuss how after school programs might be
developed.
Susan noted that the Forum met earlier with Urban Hope. Urban Hope now has partnered with the
School District to offer after school programs. Susan noted that a lot of students signed up for
programs, focused on positive lyrics in music, however, she is not sure how the programs are going.
PAL will contact Urban Hope to see how they might coordinate.
Louise mentioned that the Library Summer Reading program begins June 13"', with the kickoff on
June 21'o. Leapin' Louie will be the entertainment at the kickoff.
The next meeting will be June 1e at 7:30 a.m. following interviews of Youth Council applications.
The meeting concluded at 8:38 a.m.
