Mayor's Youth Forum

1. Meetings were held on(list dates during month): June 18, 2003
2. Current activities (summarize): The Youth Advisory Council met on June 2 for an
informational meeting. Fourteen students, most accompanied by a parent, attended. The
meeting focused on setting the context and brainstorming ideas for setting up the group's
structure.
3. Status of long-term projects: The Skate Park Task Force met on June 17 and will
participate in four community events over the summer with the goal of getting
information out to the community.
4. Number of volunteer hours contributed this month(noted number of volunteers and total
hours). 5 volunteers x 1 hour= 5 hours

Youth Forum

Present: Liz Newton, Susan Stark Haydon, Mark Mahon, Pam Brown, Rich Carlson, Mayor Jim

The meeting was opened by Mayor Griffith at 7:34 a.m.
Skate Park—Rich reported that the Skate Park Task Force members will be participating in some
community events this summer to raise awareness in the community about the skate park.
Representatives of the Skate Park Task Force plan to have informational displays and possibly
demonstrations at the July 19th Optimist's Tigard Youth Day of Fun, the August 4th National Night Out
Resource Fair at Haggen's, the August 19th Interactive Teen Health Expo at the Tigard Clinic, and the
September 13 Blast on Main Street. The task force is hoping to get more adults involved and is
holding regular fundraising meetings. The task force meetings in July are on the 1 st and 15th both
from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Tigard Water Building.
Youth Advisory Council —Liz reported on the Youth Advisory Council informational meeting that
was held on June 2. Fourteen students attended, most accompanied by a parent. Connie
Ramaekers of the Tigard-Tualatin School District presented information on the Search Institute's
assets. Liz explained the focus of the Youth Advisory Council on empowerment. Ed Wegner
facilitated a brainstorm session on ways youth can serve as a community resource. Louise Meyers
led a discussion on skill building. Liz Newton facilitated sessions on service to others in the
community, connecting to your peers, and the structure of the Youth Advisory Council. Copies of
notes and a meeting agenda are attached.
The summer schedule for Youth Advisory Council meetings is June 23, July 7, July 28, August 11 and
August 25. All meetings will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Tigard Water Building.
Youth Forum Membership— Discussion will be held on this at the July 16th Youth Forum Meeting.
