board member will select the book and a book plate will
bear the member's name and years of service on the Board.
Motion passed.
Civic Center Susan Mueller, a member of the Civic Center Advisory
Update Committee, reported on the progress of the civic center
planning. She briefly reviewed the schematic design
process and some of the decisions that have been made
regarding exterior design and materials. The Board
discussed the floor covering for the multi-purpose room.
Walt Munhall asked the group to consider a portable
wooden flooring (4'x4' blocks which snap together) for
the room when food and drink are served and so that
there could be dancing. The Board asked the Librarian
and Board Chairman to investigate cost, storage space
needed and ease installing and removing. The Board
expressed its concern for maximum community use. The
Board also commented on the need for a policy to be
established regarding use of the multi-purpose room.
Fund Raising Chairman Munhall told the Board that the Tigard Rotary
is interested in helping furnish the library. He read
a letter addressed to Denis Borman, Rotary member, indi-
cating that there will be a very visible, defined area
for young adults in the new library. The Board approved
sending the letter. Munhall told the group that he was
also working on a letter to be sent to all businesses
listed in the Chamber of Commerce directory and other
involved citizens to solicit donations. He expressed a
concern in approaching this group without discussing it
first with Councilman Tom Brian. Brian has also indi-
cated that he would be approaching much the same group

for a gifts and arts donation program, but he has
not acted yet. The Board recommended that Munhall
contact Brian and discuss the matter. There was
discussion regarding the need for the Friends of
the Library to apply for tax exempt status with
the Internal Revenue Service so that it can receive
large amounts of money. The Librarian was asked to
check with Sherwood Library on this matter since they
have been receiving money for a new building. Munhall
presented a list of projects which he felt would be
useful in raising funds. He requested that Board
members and Friends of the Library take on a project,
emphasizing that the commitment would require a year.
The Board asked the Librarian to invite members of
the Sherwood Library Friends group to a meeting to
share their expertise in fund raising.
Adjourned 9:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Irene Ertell
