Roll Call: Yvonne Burgess, Jed Cundiff, Susan Grossen and Carl Kostol Excused: Marilyn Hartzell, Vince Matarrese (resigned) Guests: George Burgess, Susan Mueller, Timothy Pied Staff: Kathy Davis, Karrin Hawes, Jody Westerman, Irene Ertell, Pat Reilly (came at 7:30) Reports: Minutes for February were approved as written. There was no March meeting. The Board participated in a workshop with City Council on April 14. There was no regular meeting. (Copy of the City Council minutes noting discussion issues included in May meeting packet.) Monthly Reports for March and April were reviewed by Library Director. Volunteer hours continue to be healthy at 3 FTE+ each month. Circulation is beginning to level off but is still a heavy workload for staff. Friends of the Library report was presented by Susan Mueller who reported that the Friends had contributed $6,169 to the library during FY 1991-92 for furnishings and materials. The Friends are also participating in the Christmas decoration of the Pittock Mansion depicting different books. Cooperative Library Advisory Board (CLAB) report was presented by Yvonne Burgess who outlined plans for countywide projects including a new levy on the ballot in May or June 1993. Personal Computers: The Chairman invited Timothy Pied to present his concerns regarding the recent removal of personal computers for public use in the library. Mr. Pied's concerns included the lack of free computer time for the unemployed and students. He also requested that the computers be reinstated until a successor to the Library Director (who is retiring) be appointed. Chairman DeBernardis explained that the decision had been made by the Library Board to discontinue the offering of the computers because it consumed large amounts of staff time and served a relatively small number of people. The staff time is badly needed to support library services that a larger number of people use. The current director's status would not alter the situation. DeBernardis also pointed out that the computers would be used as part of the library's expansion into CD ROM information stations which would serve a large number of people and expand reference services. DeBernardis assured Mr. Pied that when space and staff become available personal computers will be reconsidered. (Library Director was directed to write Pied a letter of thanks.) Jody Westerman: An outline of the issue regarding homosexuality which is being promoted by the Oregon Citizens Alliance was presented, pointing out possible censorship issues for the library. Informational materials were distributed to the Board. Library Role in Selection of Director: Pat Reilly, City Administrator, outlined the general plan for recruiting and selecting the new library director. The Library Board will be included in the interview process and will be asked for input for selection. Reilly pointed out that he hoped to make his selection by September but would not make a hasty decision. Library Expansion: Ideas to interest the public in a library expansion program were discussed. A display showing the current plan for expanding the existing facility was considered. Vince Matarrese Correspondence: Library Director presented a letter from Vince Matarrese announcing his resignation because of personal commitments. Adiournment: 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, . 'Com?.. Irene Ertell Library Director nVIEELMINT.592 NAWORMLIBRARY
