I have copied Dan and Chip on this reply as I will be out of the office next week. Hopefully Dan can get your plans ready to issue soon. Thank you, Mark VanDomelen Building Official City of Tigard markv@tigard-or.gov (503)718-2448 From: Jared Frazier [mailto:jared@americanheating.net] Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2016 3:42 PM . To: Mark VanDomelen; Dan Nelson Cc: Brian Shea; Nate Seymour; Mac Nelson Subject: Burnham and Ash - MEC2016-00068 -Alternate Method Proposal Mark/Dan, Attached is a memorandum with several approach option details(#1 through#3)we would like you to review to see if any are acceptable for use on this project. Each encompasses some method of adding fire resistance around the ducts which are not 4" Please review this, call with any questions. If any of these options (or multiple options) are an acceptable alternative design approach we will revise our drawings accordingly and resubmit them. Thanks, Jared S. In relation to Through Penetrations of Horizontal Assemblies, OSSC 2014 717.6.1 States: "In Occupancies other than Groups 1-2 and 1-3, a duct constructed of approved materials in accordance with the Mechanical Code that penetrates a fire-resistance-rated floor/ceiling assembly that connects not more than two stories is permitted without shaft enclosure 'protection, provided a listed fire damper is installed at the floor line or the duct is protected in accordance with Section 714.4." per the 2012 International Building Code commentary, it has been determined that this indicates that ducts complying in this way can only penetrate a single floor/ceiling assembly. In the Burnham and Ash Buildings, this code language will be employed in all scenarios on the top two floors. These penetrations will be protected in accordance with Section 714.4 by making use of the UL 1479 tested detail 3 shown on M600 of the mechanical drawings(HILTI F-C- 7043).These ducts will not make use of the exception to OSSC 2014 717.6.1. The exhaust ducts from the lower floors are shown penetrating either two or three floors and are required to make use of the exception to OSSC) 2014 Section 717.6.1 which states: "A duct is permitted to penetrate three floors or less without a fire damper at each floor, provided such duct meets all of the following requirements: 1. The duct shall be contained and located within the cavity of a wall and shall be constructed of steel having a minimum wall thickness of 0.0187 inches(0.4712 mm) (No. 26 gage). • The exhaust ductwork will meet these duct construction requirements. 2. The duct shall open into only one dwelling or sleeping unit and the duct system shall be continuous from the unit to the exterior of the building. • Each exhaust duct opens into only 1 dwelling unit. 3. The duct shall not exceed 4-inch (102 mm) nominal diameter and the total area of such ducts shall not exceed 100 square inches in any 100 square feet(9.3m2)of floor area. • The 1st and 2nd floor ducts that are 4" round duct meet the size requirement. AMERICAN ATk ICC. 5035 SE 24`h Avenue, Portland,Oregon 97202 P 1503.239.4600 F 1503.239.7038 8 F 1.'T O TRUST- OREGON CCB:33135 I WASHINGTON AMERII*212JC/AMERIH1123RO • • The remaining ducts using this exception will be additionally protected by the use of one of the following 4 options (please approve or disapprove each options—if multiple are allowed we will pick that most appropriate for the project).A corresponding detail is also provided for each option: I. Mineral wool board insulation filling the space between the duct and the wood studs to enclose the duct with fire resistant material. II. A layer of 5/8"Sheetrock mounted to the stud surface and the bottom surface of the floor/ceiling assembly above and mineral wool installed at the and bottom of the stud bay to enclose the duct. Ill. A layer of 5/8"Sheetrock mounted to the stud surface, the bottom surface of the floor/ceiling assembly above and the top surface of the floor/ceiling assembly below to enclose the duct. With each of these protection schemes, the rectangular duct will be protected on all six surfaces of the wall cavity. The front and back sides are also protected by sheetrock in all cases. The ducts will be protected through the floor/ceiling assemblies by the UL 1479 tested through penetration (HILTI F-C-7043) at each floor/ceiling assembly penetrated. • All of the exhaust ducts using this exception will meet the concentration requirement specified. Concentration will be determined using a 100 square foot circle (Diameter= 11'3") at each location containing multiple applicable penetrations and verifying that 100 square inches of penetration area is not exceeded. 4. The annular space around the duct is protected with materials that prevent the passage of flame and hot gasses sufficient to ignite cotton waste where subjected to ASTM E 119 or UL 263 time-temperature conditions under a minimum positive pressure differential of 0.01 inch (2.49 Pa) of water at the location of the penetration for the time period equivalent to the fire-resistance rating of the construction penetrated. • In the case of the 4" exhaust ducts using this exception, this protection procedure will be followed. In the case of the remaining ducts, the annular space will be filled with mineral wool and the penetration of each floor/ceiling assembly will be protected with the HILTI F-C-7043 through penetration. 5. Grille openings in a ceiling of a fire-resistance-rated floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling assembly shall be protected with a listed ceiling radiation damper installed in accordance with Section 717.6.2.1" • The design of the exhaust duct system does not contain grille openings in fire-resistance-rated floor ceiling assemblies. All are through penetrations. We believe that our plans will require adjustment to document compliance with one of the method options. We will revise and re-issue them once one or more of the methods is approved.
