Upon arrival, contractor(Strauss Excavating)had excavated the footings for Building 9(Units 39 through 43)to the
design footing elevation(see site plan). Footing subgrade varied from brown silt in the southern portion of the
building footprint(Units 39 and 40)to crushed gravel structural fill in the northern portion of the building(Units 41,
42 and 43). According to contractor, the crushed gravel was%-inch-minus sourced from Baker-Farmington placed
to a thickness of up to approximately 10 inches. According to the contractor, the northern portion of the site had
previously been used by NEI (excavators)to store rock onsite. Prior to placement of crushed gravel, contractor
removed geotextile from this area and stripped the underlying vegetation to expose brown silt that was similar to
the brown silt exposed in the southern portion of the site.
A'/z-inch diameter steel foundation probe was used to observe the consistency of the native silt and the density of
the crushed gravel fill. Probing indicated that the native silt was stiff, with penetrations of less than 2 inches under
full body weight. The crushed gravel fill appeared well keyed, and probing indicated that the material was dense,
with penetrations of less than 4-inch under full body weight. The probe was used to penetrate the crushed gravel at
several locations and observe the consistency of the underlying subgrade. Probing indicated that the underlying
subgrade was stiff, with penetrations of up to 3 inches under full body weight.
Based on observation, probing, and discussion with Polygon and Strauss Excavation, the footing subgrade observed
today has been prepared in general accordance with GeoDesign geotechnical recommendations.
