At the September 12, 2000, City Council meeting, Tigard City staff will report on
the results of the "Tigard Beyond Tomorrow" 2000 Opinion Poll and what steps
• will be taken to respond to citizens' opinions and comments.
The 2000 opinion poll was distributed in the City newsletter Cityscape in two
segments: the May poll focused on Library service, parks and recreation, and
public safety; and the June poll focused on bus service, transportation, and
growth. Nearly 600 total surveys were returned — 301 for May and 297 for June.
The questions for the two opinion polls were developed to follow-up on the major
concerns citizens raised in the 1996 Tigard Beyond Tomorrow survey — growth
and traffic, and as a result of the discussions held by the Tigard Beyond
Tomorrow Vision Task Force in the spring.
Initiated in 1996, the Tigard Beyond Tomorrow Community Vision process
defines what the Tigard community strives to be like in 2017. Tigard Beyond
Tomorrow is the collaborative effort of residents, business people, community
group leaders, and government professionals working together to determine the
• community's future. Through the visioning process a plan has been defined and
specific goals and action plans have been developed to work towards achieving
the vision.

This fall, the Citizen Tigard Beyond Tomorrow Vision Task Force will review the
opinion poll results and evaluate whether any adjustments are needed in the
goals in place to achieve the community's vision. The citizen/staff action
committees will then review the strategies and action plans for each vision target
to ensure that Tigard Beyond Tomorrow stays on track with the changing times
and desires of the community.
Copies of the 2000 Community Opinion Poll results are available by contacting
Loreen Mills or Liz Newton at 639-4171.
