City Awarded Federal Park Grant
The City of Tigard has been awarded $21,000 in federal funding assistance toward the cost of
constructing a covered picnic shelter in Woodard Park. The federal assistance is from the Land
and Water Conservation Fund, a 50% local match grant program administered in Oregon by the
state Parks and Recreation Department.
The arched beam picnic shelter is one of the facilities identified in the Woodard Park Master
Plan, adopted by City Council in 1999. The master plan was developed through a series of
three community workshops, facilitated by a professional park planning consultant.
• In addition to providing new recreational opportunities, the attractive, octagonal-shaped shelter
will contribute to neighborhood identify. The design will be aesthetic and distinctive. The
primary users will be neighborhood residents living within walking distance of the park. The
shelter will provide shade and rain protection for these users, including the parents of children
using future tot and child play structures, proposed to be sited nearby.
The new, grant-funded facility will be useable year-round and accessible to people with
disabilities. It will be located in an attractive, natural setting, near a grove of large oak trees. In
addition to providing a social gathering place for families, the shelter will provide a resting-place
for walkers and bicycle riders on the Fanno Creek Trail. The Wood Park segment of the
greenway trail was completed in November and will be linked by a short concrete walkway to
the proposed shelter site.
In February 2002, the city will hire a contractor through a competitive bid process to construct
the pad and install the shelter. The City Park Maintenance Supervisor will provide overall
project supervision and management.
Altogether, the city has been awarded $321,000 in state and federal park grants so far this
year.
