City of Tigard Receives Conservation Awards
This May, the City of Tigard is being recognized for its conservation efforts by the Pacific
Northwest Subsection of the American Water Works Association. Tigard is being awarded the
Excellence in Communication Award in the calendar category for its "Make Every Drop Count".
In addition, the City of Tigard, as a member of the Regional Water Providers' Consortium will be
presented with a "Special Achievement" award in Primary Education for the "As the Faucet
Turns" presentation as well as an award for the Regional Water Providers' "Water Works"
poster. Finally, the City of Tigard, in conjunction with the Westside Water Providers, will be
presented with an award for its conservation marketing campaign.
In the Pacific Northwest, many think of water as a resource that is plentiful and widely available.
However, like other natural resources, clean, safe drinking water is limited in supply. Dry
summers, climate changes and population growth, are all factors contributing to the region's
current and future water shortages. Recognizing the importance of providing a reliable and
consistent supply of water, the City of Tigard continues to support an education-based water
conservation program with the hopes of delaying the construction of new storage facilities,
transmission lines and sources.
Since many water providers in the Portland Metro Area share the same water sources,
conservation is an issue that must be addressed at both a local and regional level. In order to
encourage water conservation throughout the region, Tigard maintains a local program as well
as participates in various regional forums such as the Regional Water Providers Consortium
and Westside Water Providers. Tigard's approach to conservation allows for specific,
educational-based programs presented to the local community while spreading the message of
water conservation through regional media campaigns using TV, radio and billboard ads.
Although the City of Tigard is proud to receive such awards, it's the reduced water use of our
customers that continues to be our biggest and best achievement of the water conservation
program.
