About 150 people attended the groundbreaking and dug some dirt to kick off the
next phase of the new Tigard Library construction project on Saturday. Participants
brought their own shovels and trowels to help celebrate the occasion.
Mayor Jim Griffith noted that a year ago many people had been responsible for
passage of the bond measure to build the new library. He thanked both the City
Council and the citizens for their support of the new library.
Curtis Tigard, a member of the city's founding family,
spoke of his family's long-

interest in education and learning, noting that an elementary school had been
named after his father Charles F. Tigard. His sister, Grace Tigard Houghton, was a
long-time library supporter, who left the library a bequest of over $800,000 in 1999. Her
gift provided the impetus to find more space for the Library. The money will be used to
create a special reading room in the new library.
When it was time to dig, both children and adults enthusiastically got into the
spirit of the event. The actual "dig" took place in what will eventually be the Community
Meeting Room for the new library. When it was over, several holes dotted the area.

After the ceremony, participants were invited to take a virtual tour of the new library,
which had been staked and taped to show the outline of the building. Decorative signs
indicated where various sections of the new building will be located. Construction is expected to
begin in July.
