Participants brought their own shovels and trowels to help celebrate the occasion. Mayor Jim Griffith noted that a year ago many people had been responsible for passage of the bond measure to build the new library. He thanked both the City Council and the citizens for their support of the new library. Curtis Tigard, a member of the city's founding family, spoke of his family's long- time on -time interest in education and learning, noting that an elementary school had been named after his father Charles F. Tigard. His sister, Grace Tigard Houghton, was a long-time library supporter, who left the library a bequest of over $800,000 in 1999. Her gift provided the impetus to find more space for the Library. The money will be used to create a special reading room in the new library. When it was time to dig, both children and adults enthusiastically got into the spirit of the event. The actual "dig" took place in what will eventually be the Community Meeting Room for the new library. When it was over, several holes dotted the area.
