Korean War Ends—Armistice Signed
By Carol McAndrew
Dateline—July 27, 1953, Panmunjom, Korea—After 2 years of peace talks between
North Korea, China and the United States, an armistice was signed today, putting
an end to the military fighting here. The Republic of Korea (South Korea) refused
to sign the agreement because a permanently divided country is not acceptable to
them. Although no political agreement was reached, it is expected the armistice will
allow continued peacekeeping regulation at the de facto boundary between the two
Koreas.
Dateline—July 27, 2003,TIGARD, Oregon—The City of Tigard and Tigard's
American Legion Post#158 mark that date and the 50th Anniversary of the end of
the Korean War with a free community concert in the Bishop-Scheckla gazebo at
Cook Park. The Tualatin Valley Community Band will perform music of the era,
both patriotic and nostalgic. Mayor Jim Griffith said, "The concert will begin at
3pm, immediately after a brief presentation of the colors, including the official
Korean War Commemorative Flag,by the American Legion Post#158 color guard.
It's our way of thanking the community for their interest and support of the 3-year
ongoing project. It's free, open to everyone and a great way to honor those who
served during the conflict." For information contact Susan Koepping-Event
