City of Tigard Forester Wins Regional Award
The City of Tigard is proud to announce that our City Forester, Matt Stine, has been
named this year's Municipal Arborist for the Pacific Northwest Chapter-
International Society of Arboriculture. The award is presented to a municipal
arborist who has significantly improved the quality or arboricultural care in a particular
city, state, or province.
As Tigard's first City Forester, Stine has the distinct and continuing responsibility to
develop Tigard's Urban Forestry Program. As opposed to managing an existing
program, Stine has encountered, as well as overcome, a number of unique challenges
in developing and initiating a successful program. During his three years with the City,
Stine has successfully organized Tigard's Tree Board, developed City ordinances,
created a natural area restoration program, held Arbor Day celebrations at local
schools, and earned the "Tree City USA" recognition for the City of Tigard. With the
assistance of the Tree Board, Stine has created and developed the Street Tree Planting
program. This program provides free street trees for Tigard residents to plant in the
public right-of-way. Stine is also a board member of Oregon Community Trees (OCT),
a program that increases the public's awareness and participation in urban forestry
throughout the state.
Matt Stine's dedication, passion and creativity has enlightened our community to the
power trees have in a "small forest" like the City of Tigard and has earned him, the
much deserved, distinction of Municipal Arborist of the Year.
