ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
Tuesday, October 17, 1989
MEMBERS PRESENT: Tony Orlandini, Brian Moore, Bill Monahan, Amo DeBernardis
OTHERS PRESENT: Peggy Weston Byrd, Liz Newton, John Acker
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 a.m. and the minutes of the September
meeting were approved as written.
Community outreach as a function of the ambassador program was discussed at the
EDC/City Council workshop and again at this meeting. City Council members
suggested that ambassadors could provide a needed service by contacting new and
existing businesses as well as exiting businesses. The City will provide a list
of businesses that have acquired a new business tax certificate each month.
Ambassadors will then divide those names and welcome them the following month.
Bill suggested that the committee develop a list of questions that can be used
as an outline for those visits. John will follow up on those tasks and send a
list to members prior to the next meeting.
Peggy suggested that the committee might want to have a welcoming/orientation
get-together quarterly or twice a year for businesses that were contacted
during that time. There was a suggestion to try for January, 1990 for the first
meeting.
The idea of a brochure describing the ambassador program was discussed and John
will put together a draft for the next meeting.
Amo suggested that since the City Council gave the EDC the OK to develop a
display showing development activities in the City for the City Hall lobby, the
committee get started right away.He suggested that it didn't have to take a lot
of time or money to do a good job. Peggy told the committee members that the
Washington County Visitors Center has a display stand for sale. She described
the stand and suggested that at a price of $350 the committee may want to look
at it. Amo and John will take a look at the display stand and if it seems like
a good vehicle for a lobby display, Bill will write a letter to the City
requesting its purchase.
Tony reported that he talked to the Power Rents people and they are looking for
a place to move their Tigard operation and their corporate headquarters. He
said that they are looking for assistance and will set up a lunch meeting
including John, Tony and the Power Rents folks. They may also need assistance
with temporary office space until a move is accomplished.
Liz Newton introduced herself as the new community involvement coordinator for
Tigard. Liz explained her new role and how it will relate to the EDC.
