Subgrade soil appeared to consist of brown silt. Contractor informed me that areas covered by crushed rock were at footing subgrade elevation. About half of the site was cut to grade with the remaining needing an additional 12 inches or less of excavation, except the southernmost half(see site plan for approximate locations). I used a 36 inch diameter steel"T" probe to evaluate relative consistency of the silt subgrade. Subgrade was generally stiff with probe penetrations under full body weight under 12 inches. I observed a wet area in the subgrade that had been covered by a few inches of 1 r4 inch minus crushed rock. Gary said the water is from seepage and is not in footing area. Area generally probed medium stiff with penetrations deeper than 12 inches, which is acceptable for the building slab. Gary said he would remove any soft soil and replace with crushed rock if the area worsens. Shawn Dimke called and discussed the seepage with Sam on 4/11/17. We understand the seepage is very slow and the area will receive-18-inches of crushed rock fill for the slab. Gary indicated that some areas of the site were below subgrade elevation and that he had placed 1 to 2 feet of crushed rock to fill areas on the north side of the building pad. Crushed rock areas were generally not dense and I recommended compaction before concrete forms area placed. Gary said that he would roll the areas using a Bomag BW 120 AD-3 that is onsite. I also recommended that any areas of exposed subgrade at finish grade be covered with crushed rock and"keyed in" with a small plate compactor to prevent disturbance from rain. Based on our observations, Building 13 subgrade evaluated today is being prepared in general accordance with project requirements and our geotechnical recommendations.
