Site Visit Requested By: € Spencer(NEI) Met With (on site): Spencer(NEI), Keywest crew
Purpose: Observe Wall backfill and observe Deck footings
Outstanding Issues:
Wall 8A
Upon arrival I met with Keywest and I was directed to area indicated attached site of prepared wall backfill for wall
8A. I was informed that crew had compacted granular backfill in approx. 8" lifts utilizing a large plate compacter and
a single drum smooth roller. Using a Troxler 3430 nuclear density gauge I tested the relative density of the granular
backfill sourced from Baker(Farmington)and compared the results against a lab produced Proctor value of 127.7pcf
at 13.0 percent optimum moisture content.Areas tested met our recommendation of 95 percent compaction of
optff ium dry density value. I observed 15 to 24 blows on a 3/4"steel pin with a 6-lbs hammer to drive the pin approx.
12" into material inducing densely compacted backfill.
I observed that crews had cut to subgrade in order to extent wall 8A to the north of preexisting wall 8A. I observed
the subgrade to consist generally of native brown silt(ML). Using a%"diameter steel foundation rod I probed the
exposed subgrade. Probing indicated medium stiff to stiff subgrade. I observed the top approx. 2"of the subgrade
to be soft with varying amounts of standing water on the surface. We recommend that crews remove the soft
subgrade and de-water subgrade before placing and compacting crushed rock backfill. I was informed by Keywest
that they would remove soft subgrade before compacting crushed rock.
Lots 45-46
While onsite I observed the deck footing behind building within lot 45 and 46. Crew had prepared footings of
concrete backfill of undermined areas of footing and to tie in upper continues footing with lower pier footing. Crew
had place approx. 2"or crushed on the surface of subgrade in areas that will be backfill with concrete. Using a%Z"
diameter steel foundation rod I probed the base rock. Probing indicated dense base rock. I observed that lower pier
footings had been backfill with onsite soil interfering with the ability to tie in upper and lower footings. We
recommended that crew remove this soil backfill down to subgrade and place compacted crush rock on the surface
to protect subgrade. I observed that crew had removed soil backfill and prepared area for concrete backfill.
Based on our observation, testing, pin resistance, and probing area observed today and indicated on attached site
plan has been prepared in general accordance with our geotechnical recommendations.
