We are in re.,,eipt of the revised drawings, for the above
captioned project, for the smoke detector system to be used .in
lieu of one hour fire resistive construction in the corridors.
It would appear that. the .location of the smoke detectors are �
adequate, however, cut sheets of equipment and battery power
calculations, as requested in my July 12, 1990 letter, still
need to be provided.

This is a Fire and Life Safety Plan Review and is based on the
1988 editiclis of the Fire and Life Safety Code (UBC) , Mechanical
Fire and Life Safety Code fUMC) , Uniform Fire Code (UrC) , and
other local ordinances - ... 'regulations .
1. Door 101A: First, floor. door 101A ( 3) between tenant
lobby and the building must be equipped with panic
hardwar,-, of an approved type.
2 . Smoke Detection stem: Plans referred to and examined
by this office contain no alarm system. Not less than
three ( 3) sets of plans for the installation shall be
submitted to this office, for approval. prior to
installation. Cut sheets of equipment and battery t,
power calculations shall be included with submitted
plans. UBC Sec. 302(b)
It would appear the tenant space on the second floor
will have a corridor system. It is -,ot indicated on
the drawings if these will be of one-hour construction,
however, there is a vague reference to a smoke
detection system in at least a portion of the building,
If the intent is to use a smoke detection system in
combination with the buildinc/s automatic sprinkler
system to eliminate one hour corridor construction, as
noted above, this office will need additional details
indicating detection location and other necessary
information. Please provide the necessary details so a
proper review of the system can take place.

3. Exit Signs: Please provide details regarding exit
signs and directional exit signage within the tenant
space.
4 . Rear Exit Protection: Where enclosures are provided or
are required, then openings shall be protected in
accordance with Uniform Building Code Section 3309(c) .
In this case, not less than one hour door assemblies
are required for doors 200A and 109A in corridor 229,
and proposed corridor.
5 . Address Required: The tenant space number must be
prominently displayed on the street front where it is
readily ,risible to driver£; and officers of responding
fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles . UFC Sec.
1.0.208
F . Fire Extinquisher Requirements: Not leafs than one ( 1)
approved fire extinguisher(s) with rating of not less
than. 2A10B:C shall be prov L:sQd for each 3,000 square
feet of floor area or fraction thereof. The travel
distance to an extinguisher from any portion of the
building shall not exceed 75 feet. UFC Standard 10-1
7 . Automatic Sprinkler Plans: Plans referred to and
examined by this office contain no provisions for the
alterat4on or installation of automatic sprinkler
system. Not less than three Bets of plans for the
installation shall be submittied to this office for
approval prior tr installation. UBC 302(b)
8. Approved Plans on Job Site: One set of approved plans
bearing the stamps of th►. building department issuing
the construct±�_-r permit and this office must be
maintained rn the project site throughout all phases of
constr»ction and must be made available to building and

of the Fire and Life Safety Code (UBC), Mechanical Fire and Life Safety Code
(UMC) , Uniform Fire Code (UFC) , and other local ordinances and regulations.
Plans submitted for the above captioned property are conditionally approved y
for construction subject to the following items:
1 . Waste Storage: Commercial dumpsters and containers with an
individual capacity of 1.5 cubic yards or greater shall not be
stored or placed within 5-feet of combustible wall openings or
combustible roofheave lines. For areas containing dumpsters or
containers protected by approved automatic sprinkler systems, the
above may bo� waived. UFC Sec, 11.201(d)
2. Sprinkler Control Recommendation: Either provide wall PIV or
exterior access to automatic sprinkler riser room for ease of
p control of water supply to sprinkler. systems.
3• Insulation Flame Spread: The insulation, including breather
papers and vapor barriers which are not in contact with the upper
surface of the ceiling and under surface of the floor, as the case
may be, must have a flame spread rating of not to exceed 25 and a
smoke development classification of not greater than 450 as
measured on the Sterner Tunnel Test scale referred to as UBC
Standard No. 42-1. UBC Sec. 1713
4. Landings at Doors: There must be a floor or landing on each side
of al]- doors. The floor or landing must not be more than one-inch
lower than the threshold of the doorway unless serving access for

second level through first levels. All exiting provided in the
future will comply with Uniform Building Code. Additionally,
exiting from the first floor may become a problem in that size of
