This letter is to inform you that I hated7a
n a e cut mads, at 138137 SW Benchview,
Lot 47, adjacent to the property I13 3 Mistltoe, is a hazard and must be abated
immediately, pursuant to Section1pendix apter 33, 1994 UBC, as adopted by the
City.
The following actions are required to abate the hazard. All work on the site is stopped until
items 1 and 2 are addressed.
1. Within 4 days from the date of this letter, a design shall be submitted by a professional
engineer for temporary shoring to stabilize any portion of the subject cut which exceeds 4'-
0" in height. The shoring must be designed for a minimum equivalent fluid pressure of
45psf and must extend to the top of the subject cut. If the shoring does not extend to the
top of the cut, then the design must consider the additional surcharge of the cut above the
shoring. Additionally, the design must conservatively consider surcharge from the adjacent
Muse. If you provide an acceptable goo-technical investigation which provides different
recc..mmendations, we will consider that.
2. Within 5 days of the date of this letter. the subject shoring must be in place and inspected.
3 Prior to obtaining a footing inspection, an engineering analysis of the footing and
foundation for the portion of the proposed structure adjacent to this cut shall be submitted.
This analysis shall indicate whether the existing design of the footing/foundation is
adequate, and why, and if not, what needs to be done to make it adequate. The analysis
shall consider the appropriate equivalent fluid pressure of the back-fill material, the
provision of drainage behind the wall and any appropriate surcharge from the existing
adjacent structure.
4. The Back-fill for the foundation wall shall be compacted to a minimum of 90% of AS'.M D
a 698 (standard proctor).

Observations and Background
• The attached plan view and cress vection, Figures 1 and 2, show the hori�oontal and vertical limits of the
cut slope and the;pauximity of the cut slope to the IM*A property bw and t esidence. As shown on the
cross section (Figure 2), the ig4xT approxirrWe Il ft of the cut expctsm modam, stiff to very stiff
(TOM= shear strength values ranging from 0.4 to gmateer than 1 tst) sa fill oontear some clary and
scattered gravel end pwoes of wood. The fill is underlain by nabM medium stiff'to stiff silt eorrtaixg
some clay and local organ r nch nines.No groundwater seepage was observed in the cut dope.
• We uudowtand from discussions at the site with Pale Lesperace of W Delorto Construetiran that the
excavation was m9de about 2 weeks ago. On 6/11/98. a portion of the cut slope along the faulcai
prnperty line caved into the exc*vation. The rrpproximate limits of the cava*are shown on Figurer+ 1 and
2. RJ Dcbrto Construction nected temporary sharing norms of 3/4-hi. pb mvod over which vertical
4-by-4 m posts arc braced with 2-Fry-9 in. boards.. Mr. IAMB race indicated that the storing was riot
designed by a profmsiornl engineer.

Conclusions
Based on our oh9ervatiom at the site, we are of the opinion that the can slope along the Inukai nottbemm
