Dear Mr . Walden:
This is to confirm my phone conversation with you on April 4 , regarding the
structural adequacy of the office addition proposed for construction within
the existing Knez Building Materials Co . warehouse .
As discussed , it is the owners desire to proceed with construction of a two
story, wood frame office structure on an existing 6" reinforced concrete
floor slab within his pre-engineered , rigid frame, steel structure . We have
been involved in a number of similar situations involving the subsequent
construction of interior facilities on flat warehouse floor slabs and feel
that the plans , as submitted , are structurally adequate .
Two things , however , are important in this type of interior addition and are
provided for in the plans . They are :
1 . All lateral loads resulting from hori ..ontal earthquake forces should
be carried directly to the floor thru diaphram action of interior walls
or partitions . Lateral loads should not be transmitted to the existing
structural steel frame in a manner that would load the rigid frames be-
yond their normal. wind load design capacities .
2 . Vertical forces resulting from a combination of live and dead loads
shall be carried directly to the existing concrete warehouse floor .
They should not be transferred to the existing steel columns or their
•� existing footings unless design allowances were previously included .
Concentrated points of loading to the existing floor should also be
avoided to the maximum extent possible . The bolting of bottom, stud-wall
plates directly to the floor is , in our opinion, to be considered satis-
factory for this situation.

method of construction is structurally adequate for the proposed Knez office
addition. The owner is aware that minor floor cracking may, at some time ,
occur and is prepared to make the necessary repairs should this occur .
Time is of the essence , however , and your early approval of the proposed
addition would be greatly appreciated .
