SURFACE PREPARATION
General: Surfaces to be bonded must be clean and sound, which in all cases
req-jires some form of preparation. Determine the most cost effective method by
preparing and evaluating a small area before a full-scale operation.
Surface Evaluation: The Following tests can be used to evaluate the condition of
the substrate and the effectiveness of the surface preparation procedures.
Strength: The direct tensile strength of the surface may be determined by a pipe
cap pull-off6 test or a commercially available adhesion tester7 . Pull-off
strength should be a minimum of 200 psi.
Contaminants: The presence of grease, wax or oil may be detected by dropping a
small amount of muriatic acid onto the surface. No reaction indicates that
contaminants are present. IF oil lies penetrated into a concrete surface, it may
be detected by raising the temperature of a small area to about 150°F with a heat
lamp. Presence of the contaminant is indicated if oil appears or the area becomes
"greasy" to the touch.
CLEANING pROCEDURES8
Concrete Surfaces:
1 . Remove grease, wax and oil contaminants by scrubbing with an industrial grade
detergent or degreasing compounds and follow with mechanical cleaning.
2. Remove weak or deterioratead concrete to sound concrete by bush hammering,
gritblastinq, scarifying, waterhlasting or other suitable mechanical means.
3. Remove dirt, dust, laitance and curing compounds by gritblastinq, sanding or
etch with 1590' hydrochloric acid. Acid etching should only be used if there is
no practical alt?rnative. It must be followed by scrubbing and flushing with
copious amounts of clean water. Check for removal of acid with moist pH
paper. Reading should be more than 10.
4. Follow mechanical cleaning with vacuum cleaning.
Steel Surfaces:
1 . Remove dirt, grease and oil with suitable industrial grade cleaning and
degreasing compounds.
2. Remove rust and mill scale by gritblasting. Blast. steel to white metal.
Follow gritblasting with vacuuming or oil-free, dry air blast..

PRODUCT SELECTION
Consistency and pot life are designed for use within the "Design Application
Temperature Range" . Choose the product which most closely fits the appropriate
application temperature range. More than one product may be required if seasonal
temperature changes affect the application conditions.
PROPORTIONING AND MIXING
Mix only the amount of material that can be used before the expiration of the pot
life. If the pot life and area to be bonded permit, mix the entire contents of
the pre-proportioned units as supplied. If less than a unit size is used, first
stir each component, then measure out portions of parts A h B in the proper volu-
metric ratio. Mix the components thoroughly using a slow speed (600 rpm) drill
with a mixing paddle. A suitable mixing paddle is available from Jiffy Mixer
Company, Irvine, CA. Proper mixing will take from 3 to 5 minutes.
APPLICATION
General Bonding
Deep surface irregularities can be Faired with a 1 :1 sand:epoxy mix. Allow this
fairing material to set. Within 24 hours, apply neat bonding agent with a trowel
in sufficient quantities to fill all gaps between the mated surfaces. The bond-
line thickness should be between 1/32" and 1/8". Ideally, a small amount of bond-
ing agent should be extruded from the joint when the surfaces are mated and
pressure is applied. Surfaces must be mated while the epoxy is still tacky
(within the open time).
Sand Quality: U13e graded silica sand,- gashed, kiln-dried and bagged. Carefully
selected send blends with a low void content will require less epoxy for a given
volume of mortar compared to ungraded sands. A good "skip" gradation for low void
content is a blend by weight of two parts #12 or #16 mesh to one part #80 to #100
mesh. When graded sands are not available, a good general purpose sand is #30
mesh silica.
Moisture: Bonding to a clean damp surface is possible but less desirable than to
a dry surface. When applying this product to a damp surface, remove free water by
airblast.
BOLT AND REBAR GROUTING9
Drilling: Holes may be cut by either rate ry-percussion drilling followed by air
blow-out with oil-free compressed air or diamond core boring followed by water
flush. Where holes are pre-cast into the concrete, cast them undersized and drill
to fit.
Hole sizing: The optimum hole size is 1/4" larger than the bar diameter: larger
annular spaces are less desirable.
9 See Application Bulletin AE 1001/2
Technical Bulletin AE 477/4
CONCRLSIVE'm 1440, 1441 & 1442
April 1987
Page Five
Application: Install a measured amount of bonding agent into the bottom of the
hole with a caulking gun equipped with an extension nozzle. Insert the bar dis-
placing the bonding agent and secure it in the center of the hole. Remove excess
bonding agent from around the hole before it hardens. For grouting holes deeper
than 2 feet, pressure grouting is recommended.
MACHINE APPLICATION
A service is available through licensed applicators who utilize automatic meter-
mix equipment, designed and built by Adhesive Engineering Company to rapidly and
continuously place or pump material. Adhesive Engineering Company can provide
details and the name of the nearest applicator.
CLEAN-UP
Excess mixed epoxy adhesive on work surfaces is best removed before it hardens.
Trowels and rags are used to remove most of the material. The remainder can be
wiped off with solvent. Suitable solvents for this purpose are acetone or methyl-
ethyl ketone (both flammable) , and 1 ,1 ,1-trichlorOF,thane or methylene chloride
(both non-flammable) . Cured epoxy adhesives may be removed from tools and equip-
ment by immersion in Adhesive Engineering' s CONCRESIVE® 6003 epoxy stripper.
LIMITATIONS
Non-sag characteristics will diminish at the upper end of the application
temperature range. For structural use above 110°F service temperature, sustained
load conditions must be evaluated before application.
HANDLING AND TOXICITY
This bulletin does not accompany the product when sold. For specific hazard warn-
ings and first-aid instructions, READ THE CONTAINER WARNING LABELS CAREFULLY.
Mixed components contain chemical compounds which may rause allergic skin and
respiratory reaction. Harmful if swallowed. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on
clothing. Use only with adequate ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling.
The use of barrier creams, such as Kerodex® No. 71 or Indco Labs No. 211 , 213 or
214 is recommended. Clean rubber gloves or disposable polyethylene gloves should
always be worn. Should skin contact occur, wash immediately with soap and water,
Epocleanse 6001 or other suitable hand cleaner.
Shelf life is 18 months minimum when stored in sealed containers at temperatures
below 90°F.

Dear Sir:
This department has recently been contacted by the State of Oregon regarding
buildings that were constructed using "Timjoists" trusses for either floor or
roof supports.
Several collapses have occurred on roofs utilizing these types of trusses ---
the most recent on August 21, 1987 in Athena, OR, and here in Tigard on
.July 21 , 1987. The exact cause of the failures is not presently known.
Records indicate the building at the above-referenced address utilized the
"Timloiat" trusses in its construction.
While it is not the City's intention to Imply the trusses are unsafe, it is
Important to notify you that the trusses should immediately be examined by the
architect or eng4neer who designed the building, or by onP with expertise in
wood design.
The architect or engineer can consult with the manufartzirer by calling
Donald P. Harper, Wilharp, Inc. , Clackamas, OR, at 656-1669.
Please have a copy of the findings forwarded to phis office.
If you have any questions, please call 639-4171.
Sincerely,
Arad Roast
