A Dear Mr. Kugnle: i This department has recently been contacted by the State of Oregon r.-Carding buildings that were constructed using "Timjoists" trusses for either floor or roof supports. Several collapses have occurred on roofs utilizing these types of trusses -- the most recent on August 21,1987 in Athena, OR, and here In Tigard on July 21, 1987. The exact cause of the failures is not prese,nt:ly known. Records indicate the building at the above-referenced address utilized the "Tirujolst" trusses in its construction. The trusses must immediately be examined by the architect or engineer who designed them or by one with expertise in wood design. Pleaso have a copy of the findings forwarded to this office. Fir Loop, Tigard, Oregon Project Number 187635 Dear Mr. Kuhnle: At your request, we visited the office building at 7080 S.W. Fir Loop on December 1, 1987, and verified that Tim Joist trusses were used in the construction of the second floor As you know, the structural safety of these trusses has been questioned, as sevei <jl unexpected truss failures have recently been reported. These random failures reportedly have been caused by weak glue joints. The trusses create a hazardous condition which must be repaired as soon as possiLle. All of the trusses should be reinforced to reduce the chances of an unexpected failure. The following is an outline of the services that MEI would provide to engineer the reinforcement of the Tim Joist trusses: 1. Visual observation of the trusses installed at the subject project. At this time, we would measure the trusses, identify the actual installation and leading conditions, and identify any apparent defects or unusual conditions. 2. The trusses would be structurally analyzed to determine the requirements for joint reinforcing. vle would develop the most efficient joint reinforcing method, which would mi0inize the interruption of normal functions within the building. Construction Documents showing the details of the joint reinforcing, and the plans indicating the location of the repairs, will be prepared. 3. To ensure that the repairs are properly installed, we would observe the ti Liss repair work four times during construction. Our estimate of the cost of engineering services for this p~oject excluding the initial inspection is $3,300.
