Returning Councilor Jason Snider and incoming Councilor Tom Anderson will be sworn in to four-year terms. The council will also choose a new council president. Read more... Two Urban Renewal Plans Head to Voters in May Last month, the Tigard City Council approved two urban renewal plans—for Downtown and the Tigard Triangle. Communities nationally use the process to improve areas of a city that are not well developed or underdeveloped. Both plans will go to a citywide vote in May. Read more... Apply Now for Social Service and Community Events Grants Did you know Tigard sets aside 0.5 percent of the operating budget to fund local social services and community events?This year, that percentage is providing more than $290,000 to 40 organizations and events in amounts ranging from $400 to $29,000. Community Vision Emerges for Future Metzger School Park For more than a year, neighbors, local stakeholders and residents of all ages shared their ideas, culminating in plans for the future Metzger Elementary School Park. The school's athletic fields will soon transform into a public park, open to residents outside of school hours and serving an area of Tigard where residents do not have quick access to recreational spaces. Most drivers know that texting and hands-on use of a mobile phone are illegal in Oregon. Yet, after many years of decline in Oregon and across the United States, there has been an alarming increase in fatal collisions. Read more... Striking a Balance on Feather Flag Signs In response to the growing use of"feather flag" signs, Tigard compliance officers are launching a campaign in January to educate local businesses about their use and regulations to obtain temporary sign permits. The effort will address the improper display of the signs, particularly at unsafe locations along the Highway 99W corridor. Read more... Public Comments Sought on Downtown Cleanup Report As part of ongoing efforts to clean up two downtown Tigard properties through a federal brownfields grant, the city is seeking feedback on a recently published report on ongoing efforts. January Tool Drive to Support New High School Program The City of Tigard has launched a tool drive to support Tigard High School's new manufacturing pathways program. The program needs surplus screw drivers (Phillips and flat head), metric and standard Allen wrenches, clamps of all varieties and, if possible, a laser cutter and CNC machines. Small donated items can be left at the Permit Center at City Hall in January. Read more... Street Maintenance Fee Schedule Change in January To help maintain the city's transportation infrastructure, the city charges a Street Maintenance Fee toTigard residents and businesses that is assessed monthly on utility statements. A new fee schedule approved last March will go into effect on Jan. 1. Additional funds from the adjusted fees will begin to address a backlog of paving projects over the next 20 years. Read more... Tigard Residents Join New Light Rail Advisory Group Seven Tigard community members will be among 17 appointees to the newly created Community Advisory Committee, ensuring local voices are heard in future light rail discussions. The group will advise the Southwest Corridor Plan Steering Committee and project staff on route options for the planned light rail connecting Tigard and Portland. Read more...
