Request: Variance to Section 16.36.040 (9) TMC to allow a wall
sign in excess of 20% of the exterior surface.
Location: 12175 SW Main St. (Wash. Co. tux map 281 2AA, lot 5200)

BASIC FACTS:
1. Section 16.08.320 TMC defines sign to include a painting or
anything that is designed, used or intended for advertising
purposes or to inform or attract the ettention of the public.
2. Section 16.08.360 TMC defines wall sign to mean any sign attached
to, painted on or ,erected against the wall of a building or
structure with the exposed face of the sign in a plaiie parallel
to the plane of the wall.
3. Section 16.36.040 (9) TMC states that wall signs may be erected
or maintained, which shall not exceed in gross area 20/ of the
face of the building to which the sign is attached or on which
a sign is maintained in commercial zones.
4. Section 16.34.020 TMC authorizes the Planning Commission to
grant variances in the provisions of the Sign Code based on
findings that, due to practical difficulties, undue hardship,
or inconsistencies with the objectives of this title, the
strict or literal interpretation and enforcement of a specific
requirement hereunder should be waived or modified.
FINDINGS:
1. Applicant has requested a variance to section 16.36.040 (9)
of the Sign Code to allow a wall sign in excess of 2091 of
the wall surface at 12175 SW Main St.
2. The wall painting on the exterior of this building is a wall
sign within the meaning of Section 16 of TMC.
3. The emblem surface of the painting is approximately sq.
ft. or °o of the total wall area.
It. No supportive finding of practical difficulties , undue hard-
ship or inconsistencies with the objectives of the TMC are
readily apparent, nor were they supplied in the applicant's
written submittal.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
To be supplied at PC hearing after close of public testimony

Fersuant to our telephone conversation this morning,
regarding violation of the City' s sign code, I hereby request
a variance for the decorative painting on the front of my
store at 12175 S. W. Main atreet.
Enclosed is a check for ; 25.00. As I was unaware that
painting the stcre front would be considered a sign, and that
I would need a permit, please consider this request for a
variance as so-,n as possible.
