noncompliance with any applicable regulations of local government that may exceed State
requirements.
1. Structure required to be Type throughout due to area, height,
occupancy, Fire Zone.
2. One-hour fire resistance rating required for all interior construction.
3. All living units required to be completely separated by one-hour fire resistive construction.
4. Exit corridors require separation from any other area by one-hour fire resistive construction.
Sec. 3304(g)
5. Door assemblies of interior openings to corridors are required to have a fire resistance
rating of not less than 20 minutes and must be self-closing or automatic-closing. Relights in
corridors require wired glass set in fixed (steel) framing. See 1973 State Structural
Specialty Code, Sections 3304(h) and 4306.
6. 'Lorage rooms, closets, laboratories, shops and areas of similar hazard require separation
from other areae by at least one-hour fire resistive construction. Furnace and boiler rooms
require one-hour fire resistive construction.
7. All vertical openings such ,s stairways, trash chutes, etc., require full enclosure of
one-hour, two-hour fire resistance. Access ways to such shafts require self-
closing and latching Class B fire door assemblies one-hour rated, one and
one-half hour rated. Sec. 1706
R. Attic areas require draft barriers as per Sec. 3205, not exceeding each 3,000 square feet.

1. Voids created by ceiling-floor systems require draft barriers not exceeding each 1,000 square

visions for locking against egress, with obvious method of operation. Flush bolts other

room doors through which patients must be transported in wheelchairs, stretchers or beds.
Sec. 331e
sleeping rooms require at least one window readily openable from inside without special tools
and providing a clear opening of not less than 5.7 square feet. The minimum net clear opening
height dimension shall be 24 inches. The minimum net clear opening width dimension shall be
20 Inches. Where windows are provided as a means of egress or rescue they shall have a
finished sill height not more than 44" (inches) above the floor.

20. Surface flame spread rates of walls and ceilings, minimum requirement: stairway - 25,
corridors - 75, other rooms - 200. Sec. 4203
21. Combustible acoustical material required to he secured with staples or equivalent metallic
holders or a heat resistant adhesive capable of withstanding 1000°F for one-half hour.

22. All curtains, drapes and similar furnishings are required to be noncumbueti.ble or rendered

23. With standard spacing, rows of seats between aisles may not exceed 14. Rows of seats

and listed by a nationally recognized testing agency, such as V.T.., Inc., and to be in-
stalled in compliance with agency's specifications and recognized safe practices. The
installation of ventilation systems is required to be in substantial conformity with the
1976 Mechanical Specialty Code. Corridors are not acceptable for use as supply or return
air plenums.
27. A dust collection system is required for shop areas for nonportable machines emitting or
producing duets. (Ref: Sec. 1008) Dust collection equipment to be located outside of
building or in one-hour separated room equipped with automatic sprinklers.
2,. A.S.M.e. approved pressure relief valves are required for all water heaters, installed
either in separate water tank port or in port for hot water line. shutoff valves may not
be located between a water tank and relief valve.
24. A firefighting water supply is required within 500 feet of building that is capable of
producing 500 qpm (minimum) for 10 minutes for each 5,000 square feet of floor area within
building up to a maximum of 500 gpm for 30 minutes, or provide a 5,000 to 15,000 gallon
reserve water supply as required.
30. Interior wet standpipes at least 2 inches in diameter located and equipped as per Sec. 3804
are required. Couplinqs and connections required to be American National standard Thread.

space between the fixtare housing and combustible material.

Gentlemen:
At your request we have conducted a soils and foundation investigation at the site of a new
building for Utility Equipment, Inc., in Tigard, Oregon. We present herewith a report of
our findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Site Description
The site is located in ,3ast Tigard, Oregon between S. W. Hunziker Road on the south and
the Beaverton - Tigard Highway on the north. The area slopes to the northeast and is covered
with field grass. The bu'Iding area is within a stand of oak trees and partly submerged dile
to poor drainage of a westerly-flowing stream.
Subsurface Exploration
Power auger borings to depths ranging from 15 ft to 20 ft were made at 8 locations as shown
on Fig. 1, attached. Samples were taken with Standard Penetration Tests at 2.5 ft inrervals.
The Stando-i Penetration Test is performed by driving a 2-in. O.D. split-spoon sampler into the
r
undisturbed formation at the bottom of tho horing with repeated blows of a 140-lb pin-guided
hammer falling 30-in. The number of blows required to drive the sampler a given distance is a
measure of the soil consistency. Samples were identified in the field, placed in sealed containers

and transported to the laboratory for further testing and classification.
Laboratory Tests
Laboratory tests were performed on representative samples. These included natural water con-
tent, Atterburg Limits, and particle size distribution. Results of the tests are summarized in Table I.
Geology and Soils
The site is underlain by approximately 40 to 50 ft of Willamette silt, underlain by 50 to 60 ft
of Troutdale formation which consists of brown and gray silt, clay, fine sand and pebbles; this
is in turn underlain by Columbia River basalt. Soil units penetrated in borings belong only to the
Willamette silt and consist of soft to medium firm, brown and blue-gray silt and sandy silt.
Geologic sections have been prepared by combining boring logs with topographic information.
These are shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
Groundwater
Groundwater was observed during drilling at depths of 2.0 to 20 ft; however, the water level
was 0 to 2.0 ft in all borings 24 hours after completion of drilling. It is e.iticipated that ground-
water will be at or near ground surface in the winter and spring.
Plans for Development
We understand that present plans for development of the site call for the construction of a
one-story office warehouse building with maximum column loads of the order of 50 Kips.
Conclusions and Recommendations
On the basis of our studies at this site, we draw the following principal conclusions;
1 . The upper clayey silt unit is capable of supporting light to

1 . moderate foundation loads.
2. A continuous spread footing placed 1 to 2 ft below floor- grade
can be designed for contact pressures of 2000 psi'. Settlements
of the order of 3/8-irt. diff�rential and 3/4-in. total sbould be
anticipated.
3. Slabs can be placed on grade after removal of top soil . We
recommend a 4 to 5-in, sand subbase under all grade !labs.
4. Flexible pavement for roads and parking area can be designed
on the basis of the C.C.R. value of 3.
5. The addition of heavy fills to the site will result in compression of
the underlying fine-grained soils, which would in turn be teflected
in settlement of structures supported by these soil units. Should
the project be revised to include substantial earthwork operation-,
we should be consulted regarding steps to be taken.
The upper silt unit is quite sensitive to moisture. Consequently, excavotions should be
protected from diStUrba-ICC in the presence of excess moisture. Silt can be used as compacted
fill during favorable weather; however, no attempt should be made to place and compact it
during rainy weather.
We shall be pleased to be available ror consultation during the remaining design and
construction phase of this project.
