We present herewith a report of our findings, conclusions and recommendations. Site Description The property is located on the southerly side oT'Pacific HiTi;ay just west of Walnut Place in Tigard, Oregon. An existing office structure rests to immediate east of this site.. The pr.opoFed site development measures some 158 ftet along the street by approxi.amtely 200 feet in depth. At the time of this investigation portions of the site were undergoing excavation to remove fill soils . No other site obstructions were noted at that time. Subsurface Exploration In order to ascerf :,in sail conditions, 3 test borings were made using a truck-mounted hollow-stem power auger. Boring locations are shown in Fig. 1 , attached. Samples were taken at 2. 5-ft . intervals to a depth of 15 feet, and at 5-ft . intervals thereafter in conjunction with the Standard Penetration Test. The Standard Penetration Test is performed by driving a 2-in. O.D. split-spoon sampler into the undisturbed formation at the bottom of the boring with repeated blows of a 140-1b. pin-guided hammer falling 30 inches . The number of blows required to drive the sampler a given distance is a measure of the soil consistency. Samples were identified in the field, placed in sealed containers and transported to the laboratory for further classification and testing. Mr . We point out that favorable weather will be require for operations in which tine-grained materials are being worked. In the event: that rainy weather is encountered during site preparation, it may be necessary to either suspend operations or use an all-weather imported material (e.g. , reasonably free-draining pit or river-run gravelly sand, sand, gravel or crushed rock ) . Structural fills should be spread in uniform lifts not exceeding 8 inches loose thickness, with each lift thoroughly compacted by repeated coverages of loaded hauling units and special equipment . The degree of compaction compaction sought in structural fil. ts is 95 percent of maximum density as determined by laboratory compaction test AASHO T-180. 4. An alternative foundation s stem to replacement the fi 1 wou constst �_ ment of all of a compensate oun1cation. The princip e of the compensated foundation system is that an amount of earth greater than the weight of the proposed building is removed from t;ie building area. Normally the excavation for a crawl space or basement is sufficient to-) ff-set the load of wood-frame structures of one or two stories. Inasmuch as weak and compressible materials would remain beneath the building and would actually be used to support structural loads, careful precautions must be taken to bridge areas of possible loss of support and to avoid the placing of heavy loads in the vicinity of the building (e.g. , fills for landscaping or access ramps) . If the compensated foundation system is to he employed for this site, we recommend that at least 3 feet of material bf, removed from the entire building area and that footings be designed for 2000 psf . Footings should be 24 inches in rninimurn width. All foundation elements should be continuous or tied; independent column fkDotings must be avoided entirely. All structural fill should be spread in loose lifts not exceeding 8 inches loose thickness , with each lift thoroughly comparted by repeated coverages of loaded hauling units and special compaction devices (sheeps-foc,t rollers or heavy rubber-tired rollers) . The degree of compaction sought is 90 percent of maximum density as determined by laboratory compaction test AASIIO T-180. We point out that local material cannot be worked in wet weather; earthwork operations must he shut down to await favorable weather. 6. _Foundation Pre >aration Inasmuch as the native soil —1—c wi prove e support for the main portion of the units w structure are extremely sensitive to disturbance in the presence of excess moisture, care should be taken to protect prepared bearing surfaces until footing concrete can be placed. Precautions to achieve this end would consist of ( 1 ) covering of prepared bearing surfaces with impervious membranes or granular blankets ( 4-in . minimum thickness) or ( 2) cessation of work during rainy weather. 7. Surface run-off. ( from roofs , parking areas, etc. ) should be tight-lined to the storm sewer or other approved disposal areas. 8. Under no circumstances should surface run-off_ be ?.ed into foundation drains. 9. Any areas of the building which are to be developed below the exterior site grade? must be provided with 3 well-designed drainage system, in order to control hydrostatic pressure against walls, seepage of groundwater through base walls, etc. 10. Lateral earth pressures on foundation wall:' . retaining walls, etc. may be calculated on the basis of equ)valent fluid pressure of 35 pcf for level backfill and 60 pcf for steeply sloping backfill. 11 . All backfill , retaininq walls , etc. , should be made with select granular material ( sand and/or gravel ) . We recommend that the structural fills be continuously inspected by a representative of the soils Pngineer in order to insure the thoroughness and uniformity of their compaction. We shall be pleased to provide such additional assistance or information as you may require in the balance of the design phase of this project and to aid in construction control or solution of unforeseen conditions which may arise during the construction period.
