Sizing a rooftop Low ambient applications Bigger isn't necessarily better. While an air conditioner The optional Carrier economizer can adequately cool your needs to have enough capacity to meet the design loads, it space by bringing in fresh, cool outside air. In fact, when doesn't need excess capacity. In fact, excess capacity so equipped, accessory low ambient kit may not be typically results in very poor part load performance and necessary. In low ambient conditions, unless the outdoor humidity control. air is excessively humid or contaminated, economizer based "free cooling" is the preferred less costly and Using higher design temperatures than ASHRAE energy conscious method. recommends for your location, adding "safety factors" to the calculated load, are all signs of oversizing air In low ambient applications where outside air might not conditioners. Oversizing the air conditioner leads to poor be desired (such as contaminated or excessively humid humidity control, reduced efficiency, higher utility bills, outdoor environments), your Carrier rooftop can operate larger indoor temperature swings, excessive noise, and at ambient temperatures down to -20°F (-29°C)using the increased wear and tear on the air conditioner. recommended accessory Motormaster low ambient controller. Rather than oversizing an air conditioner, engineers U should "right size" or even slightly undersize air coconditioners. Correctly sizing an air conditioner controls humidity better; promotes efficiency; reduces utility bills; extends equipment life, and maintains even, comfortable temperatures. Interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate. 2. External static pressure is the static pressure difference between the return duct and the supply duct plus the static pressure caused by any FIOPs or accessories. 3. Tabular data accounts for pressure loss due to clean filters,unit casing, and wet coils. Factory options and accessories may add static pressure losses. Selection software is available, through your salesperson, to help you select the best motor/drive combination for your application. 4. The Fan Performance tables offer motor/drive recommendations. In cases when two motor/drive combinations would work, Carrier recommended the lower horsepower option. 5. For information on the electrical properties of Carrier motors, please see the Electrical information section of this book. 6. For more information on the performance limits of Carrier motors, see the application data section of this book. 7. The EPACT (Energy Policy Act of 1992) regulates energy requirements for specific types of indoor fan motors. Mo- tors regulated by EPACT include any general purpose, T-frame (three-digit, 143 and larger), single-speed, foot mounted,polyphase, squirrel cage induction motors of NEMA(National Electrical Manufacturers Association)design A and B, manufactured for use in the United States. Ranging from 1 to 200 Hp, these continuous-duty motors operate on 230 and 460 volt, 60 Hz power. If a motor does not fit into these specifications, the motor does not have to be co replaced by an EPACT compliant energy efficient motor. Variable speed motors are exempt from EPACT compliance requirements. Therefore, the indoor fan motors for Carrier 48KC**04-06 units are exempt from these requirements. 28 FAN PERFORMANCE (DIRECT DRIVE) Table 17-48KC*04 Vertical Unit- Direct Drive Table 18-48KC*04 Horizontal Unit- Direct Drive Speed CFM ESP BHP Speed (Torque)tap (Torque)tap CFM ESP BHP 900 0.28 0.18 900 0.44 0.22 975 0.16 0.17 975 0.32 0.21 1050 0.05 0.15 1050 0.21 0.20 1125 - - 1125 0.11 0.18 1 1200 - - 1 1200 0.04 0.16 1275 - - 1275 - - 1350 - - 1350 - - 1425 - - 1425 - - 1500 - - 1500 - - 900 0.34 0.20 900 0.50 0.25 975 0.21 0.19 975 0.38 0.23 1050 0.09 0.17 1050 0.26 0.22 1125 - - 1125 0.16 0.20 Y 2 1200 - - 2 1200 0.07 0.19 0D Tr 1275 - - 1275 0.00 0.16 1350 - - 1350 - - 1425 - - 1425 - - 1500 - - 1500 - - 900 0.48 0.25 900 0.66 0.30 975 0.34 0.23 975 0.52 0.28 1050 0.20 0.22 1050 0.39 0.27 1125 0.07 0.20 1125 0.27 0.26 3 1200 - - 3 1200 0.16 0.24 1275 - - 1275 0.05 0.24 1350 - - 1350 - - 1425 - - 1425 - - 1500 - - 1500 - - 900 1.06 0.46 900 1.17 0.48 975 0.98 0.48 975 1.10 0.49 1050 0.90 0.50 1050 1.04 0.51 1125 0.82 0.52 1125 0.97 0.53 4 1200 0.72 0.54 4 1200 0.89 0.55 1275 0.61 0.53 1275 0.81 0.56 1350 0.49 0.53 1350 0.72 0.57 1425 0.37 0.53 1425 0.62 0.58 1500 0.24 0.53 1500 0.52 0.58 900 1.10 0.47 900 1.20 0.49 975 1.02 0.49 975 1.14 0.51 1050 0.93 0.51 1050 1.04 0.53 1125 0.85 0.54 1125 0.97 0.55 5 1200 0.81 0.56 5 1200 0.95 0.57 1275 0.74 0.58 1275 0.90 0.60 1350 0.67 0.61 1350 0.84 0.62 1425 0.60 0.63 1425 0.78 0.65 1500 0.52 0.66 1500 0.72 0.68 29 FAN PERFORMANCE (DIRECT DRIVE) (cont.)
