We visited the site on May 21 , 1983, to make a visual reconnaissance of the
foundation excavation.
The sLbsurface zonditions were as we anticipated in our letter o'F May 13, 1983.
Near the entryway area, water ! egan flr-ling in at the base of the fiI . soft-
ening the ground in that area. We felt that the two-inch minus material u,d
for structural backfill woulc, not properly stabilize 0is area and recomnendcd
using four-inch qua-ry rock in the lower 12 to lit inches of the fill . This
was done and the -emai,Aer of the filling proceeded without incident. We feel
that the work was performed in a conscientious and workmanlike manner and
foresee no difficulties with the foundation.
During a second visit, on May 20, 1983, we approved the use of a continuous,
steel-reinforced, footing on the existing fill for supporting interior floor
loads. Each strip footinq wit ; support three(-) interior piers.

Subject: Residential Site Inspection
Lot 29, Windmill Subdivision
Dear Kevin:
In accordance with your verbal authorization on May 12, 1983 we have per-
formed a surface reconnaissance at the subject site. The site is scheduled
for construction of a single-story, wood-frame residence.
The site is generally level with no evidence of surface instability. The
west side of the site borders on a small creek. It appears that the site
has been covered with a thin layer of fill that varies from four to five
feet thick at the west property line to less than one foot at the east pro-
perty line. Fill soils appear to consist of sandy silt with occasional de-
bris. We anticipate that the old topsoil layer was not removed prior to
filling.
Despite several days of dry weather preceeding our visit, we observed stand-
ing water at the toe of existing fills. This appears to be representative
of the regional groundwater table.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
With Lroper foundation prgpa .uu the site is suitable for conventional
residential construction. Since the existing fills were installed in an
uncontrolled manner and may contain organics or other debris, we do not

recommend supporting column or wall loads on the existing fills. Foundation
excavat;ons should extend through the fill as well as through any underly nnc
topsoil layer. We anticipate that some foundation excavations will encounter
groundwater, which can cause detrimental softening of excavation bottoms .
In areas where groundwater or soft saturated soils are encountered, we re-
commend that a minimum one foot thick ead of cam acted crushed rock be in-
stalled beneath footings. The rock pad should extend six inches (horizontally)
beyond all footing sides. Interior pad foundations that support only floor
loads may be established directly err existing fills. Although some settlement
of pad foundations may occur, it should be within normal expectations for
residential construction and can be easily corrected by shi"riinQ.
As we discussed, we understand that we will be contacted to inspect footing
excavations for suitability before the crushes' rock n's a i .__..u..
