of the problem hq letter on October 05, 1987. I have enclosed a
copy for lrcur ir+formation.
Kramer Gehlen Associates, Inc. , the original structural engineers
for the project, inspected the building on October 13 and 20, and
sent me a written recommendation. Copy enclosed. Essentially
it said the,L t.&ey thought the trusses are reasonably safe for
the present loading condition.
I am continuing to work with the engineers and contractors and
hope to have a resolution to the problem in the next month or so.

In 1.979 , Haertl Constructors, :.r-c constructed the Washington
Square Office Building, now owned by you, located on S.W. Scholls
Ferry Road, Beaverton, Oregon, per plans and specifications
provided by the developer. During the construction, roof trusses
manufactured by Timjoist, Inc. were recommended and approved by
the architects and engineers for use in this building.
It has come to our attention that roof systems manufactured by
Timjoist, Inc. have failed in at ].east one project. The purpose
of this letter is to advise you of these roof system failures and
suggest that you take whatever steps you deem appropriate and
nec3ssar.y to protect the customers and employees of the above-
referenced building.
At a minimum, we suggest you contact the architects and engineers
of this project and discuss this matter with them.

Dear Mr. Dougher:
This department has recently been contacted by the State of Oregon regard-
ing buildings that were constructed using "Timjoists" trusses for either
floor or roof supports.
Several collapses have occurred on .roofs utilizing these types of trusses-
the most recent on August 21 , 1987 in Athena, OR and here in Tigard on
July 21 , 1987 . The exact cause of the failures is not presently known .
Records indicate the building at the btove-referenced address utilized the
"Timjoist' trusses in its construction .
While it is not the City' s intention to imply the trusses are unsafe, it is
important to 110tify you that the trusses should be examined immediately
by the architect or engineer who designed the building, or by one with
expertise in wood design.
The architect or engineer can consult with the manufacturer by calling
Donald P. Harper, Wil.harp, Inc. , Clackamas OR at_ 656-1668 .
Please have a copy of the findings forwarded to this office .

Dear_ Mr. Dougher:
At your request on the 13th and 20th of October, 1987 I made a
visual observation of the roof and floor trusses at the above
referenced building for the purpose of: 1. Determining whether
the structure consisted of Tint Joist all wood glued finger
jointed trusses and 2 . Whether there were any obvious signs of
problems.
The trusses fog• this building are the truss type causing concern.
There were several hard ceiling areas that did not allow direct
access for review. However, I had an opportunity to visually
review at least a portion of each end of each truss and the
bottom chord 'singer joint from a distance.
There were no visual signs of problems or web to chord
separations and, in my opinion, the trusses are reasonably safe
for the present loading condition.
A number of Structural Engineers met in Portland on the 24th of
September, 3.987 to discuss this type of truss system and to
establish a consensus as to an approach for• investigation and
repair. A summary of the points and discussions in that meeting
is enclosed.

Based on the above consensus we recommend that the end webs of
all. of the trusses be reinforced, and that trusses Supporting
mechanical equipment be fully reinforced.
There were gussets present oil both the floor and roof trusses.
However. , the minimum number required needs to be evaluated.

these, we will initiate a repair program for you When
that receive
reinforcement of the trusses can be accomplished.
I have enclosed a signed agreement form for you to review and
