Subject: Visual Soil and Groundwater Evaluation
Lot 79 Copper Creek 3, Tioard, Otennn
Mr. Miller:
At your request we revisited the subject site. ,4e understand that the build-
ing inspector was concerned with soft soil conditions along the. east. wall of
the house. These conditions were apparently assoclatt: w,ch the spring acti-
vity discussed in our letter on August 3, 1984 .
At the time of my visit (,August 8, 1984 , 11 :30 a.m. ) the snring activity had
been controlled and soils at the east side of the house had dried out sub-,' In-
tially. In addition, the contractor had stabilized the foundation bottoms in
this area with un to two feet of rock fill . The rock fill appeared to be
moderately dense and reportedly was well tracked in with a .mall dozer. Based
on these observations it is my opinion that the soils are suiti>.ble for conven-
tional spread foundations.

Mr. Miller:
At your request we visited the subject site to did in solving the ground-
water problems in the excavation.
During the excavation for a tri-level house, springs were unr_ever•ed along
the east wall on both the upper and lower excavation levels. The soils in
this area concis of very fine sand beds separated by thin, low-permeability
silts The sands trap water, and kvl---,n they daylight in an excavation or on
a hillside, they yield runring water as sor•ings .
We recommend installing a subdrain along the entire west wall , with a 20
font long stems along the north and central east-west trending walls . The
trenches should be approximately 18 inche' deep and lined with nr.n-woven
filter fabric housing a perfor.ted nine and drain rock as outlined below.

The sands are very fine-grained and in the presence of running
water they tend to "ripe" or flow. Without the filter fabric, the sands
would wash into the drain rock, clogging it in a few years, but more impor-
tantly, voids and zones of weakness could develop below the foundations .
Care should be taken to keep the drain from being too close to the footing;
oth, rwise settlements and damage to the drain could result.
If you have any questions or desire -urther information, please contact the
undersigned.
