Election Results for City Council and Other Ballot Measures Residents elected incumbent Jason Snider and Tom Anderson to the City Council. The pair were the top two finishers in a field of four candidates. Residents also rejected Ballot Measure No. 34-256, the proposed fuel tax increase to pay for street maintenance, and approved Ballot Measure 34-257, which allows the city tax the sale of marijuana items. Read more... Mayor's Corner I would like to congratulate Jason Snider on his reelection and Tom Anderson on his election to the City Council for the next four years. I would also like to thank Marland Henderson for his service to the council over the last eight years and before that, his service as a member of the Downtown Task Force and the Tigard Central Business District Association. The city is a better place for his knowledge and for his long-term advocacy of mental health, drug and alcohol addiction awareness issues. Read more... Leaf Disposal and Food Drive: Dates in December Almost 4,000 pounds of food were collected in November by Public Works for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry as part of the annual Leaf Disposal and Food Drive. Come to Cook Park on Dec. 10 and 17, to drop off leaves and donate to local families in need. Read more... City of Tigard Newsletter: December 2016 Edition Page 4 of 6 Garbage Pickup on Normal Schedule for Christmas Week The city is served by two franchised solid waste haulers: Pride Disposal Company and Waste Management Inc. Because Christmas Day falls on a weekend, there will be no delay in collection the week of Christmas for either hauler. Use online tools to find your hauler and keep track of your garbage and recycling pick-up schedule. Brownfields Provide Opportunities for Learning The City of Tigard's Brownfields Initiative helps property owners who have contamination concerns get their questions answered, while implementing the city's redevelopment plans, attracting new investment and improving public health. Last month, the initiative also provided hands-on learning to 25 Portland Community College environmental science students and 11 Oregon Tradeswomen students who learned the nuts and bolts of environmental assessments work. Safe Routes to School Program Awarded New Grant The city's Safe Routes to School program, which promotes biking and walking for students in Tigard area schools, won its second two-year grant. Funding through the summer of 2017, first awarded by Metro's Regional Travel Options grant program, was renewed by the agency in November. The support means Tigard will be able to continue to grow the program through June 2019. Read more... TVF&R Program Seeks to Reduce ER Trips for Area Residents Starting in November, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R) launched its Mobile Integrated Health program. The initiative will assist Tigard and other service area residents who may make frequent trips to the emergency room (ER). TVF&R paramedics, funded by health organizations, will make post-ER care visits to patients' homes to help decrease 911 usage, trips for emergency services, hospital re-admissions and health care costs. John Tigard House Hosts Winter Holiday Event The Tigard Historical Association invites the public to celebrate an 1880s-themed Victorian winter holiday on Dec. 3, at the John Tigard House. Holiday treats and hot spiced apple cider will be served. The event is free, but donations are accepted. The event is open to all ages, including families with children. Read more...
