RE: Hess Residence
Patio Roof
Mr Hess:
This letter is intended to address the covered patio portion of your expansion as it relates to code
wind/seismic lateral loads imposed upon it.
The patio roof in question is located at the NW corner of the residence and is open on two sides.
It is comprised of pre-engineered wood roof trusses spanning in the NW direction between the
patio beam at the north end and wood stud bearing walls at the middle and south supports.
The patio roof trusses and diaphragm are part of the primary roof system. Therefore any lateral
loads applied to this portion of the roof will transfer back into the main diaphragm body and
distribute itself into the plywood shearwalls around the exterior perimeter of the structure.
Hypothetically, had the patio roof been constructed independently of the primary building roof,
there would be separate lateral issues that would need to be addressed. However, since this is not
the case, it is our opinion that the patio roof as drawn is adequately anchored to the main
diaphragm and should not be cause for concern.
We did analyze the patio roof for wind uplift and confirmed that the framing anchors specified
on your building section are sufficient. Please see attached.
If you have any questions, regarding the comments above, please call.
Sincerely,
ucTuki
